It's in Tuscaloosa this year. Probably the first time in 20-25 years it's been back there. Team is at Bama and D&S is at Leland. Too bad Leland isn't the boneyard it used to be. It would have been funny to watch some guys average 50 sticks less just by walking in the door there.

We'll be there the 10th. D&S on Saturday and team on Sunday.

We would have been bowling on the 10th but we found enough people to piece together a team for Southern that weekend.

Leland was a joke a few years ago when I went there. Have they finally remodeled?

I was there about 3-4 years ago and it still looks the same inside. Same brown carpet, dark lighting, no room whatsoever in the pits and lots of cigarette smoke.

What had changed was the actual lane conditions themselves. The previous "pattern" was basically 10 units outside the 10s and 20 units between them. That was what it was all the way into the early 2000s. You'd blow the pattern out by the end of practice and then it turned into a reverse block with it being so flat.

When I went back about 3-4 years ago, I grabbed the league book and noticed a bunch of averages in the 190s and 200s, which was unheard of prior. Highest average in the house for the nine years I was there was Charles Melson's 190 or so. One year, we didn't get our first 600 series in the league until week 33 of a 36-week season. Trish is still running the place and she said they'd finally relented on the shot. I didn't find it terribly easy but it's at least playable now. Still had the old wood down. Shot's out on the gutter but it is there, at least. Carry is still dubious at best.

I suspect it's still going to throw a lot of people for a loop. I think only a couple of the major houses in the state (Florida Bowl in Mobile, the house in Decatur, maybe Lauderdale up in Florence) are still real wood. I don't expect to put up big numbers there, either. I have a grand total of one 600 to my name in that building.

But I will have fun, I can promise you that.

Your big problem is you're going to be there the same weekend of A-Day. If you're at Bama on Saturday, you will have zero parking. They're expecting probably 80k-90k people for the spring football game, as there's sure to be something special done for the National Championship team.

FYI Florida bowl is a full syn. lanes now. That was part of the deal for Mobile to get Southern. They put them in about 4-6 months ago. I was worried about the parking issue with us shooting the 4:00 shift.

Game will start at 1 or 2 p.m., they haven't decided yet. They're leaning towards 2 p.m. If that's the case, you'll have a parking problem. Traffic will be zilch because everyone will still be at the stadium, at least. And I bet they don't have the foresight to hire security to make sure their lot doesn't overflow (of course it doesn't matter, as a regular league night pushes cars all the way down to where Godfather's Pizza used to be).

Kind of hate to hear Florida went synthetic. There's just not a lot of sizable wood houses in this state anymore. There's a 20-lane house in Scottsboro that opened about six years ago that has them. Bridgeport is closed now.

Last time I was in Florida Bowl, it was for the state tournament in 1991. I remember the architecture of the place being really cool, both the outside and the ceilings inside. Am I remembering correctly or is that just my age playing tricks on me?

Yea the place hasn't changed much other than lanes and score keepers. They really had no choice. They did all they could with the old lanes. The had cut them down to there was nothing left anymore. It was in sad shape. I can say the lanes are better they are still working on the shot. City tournament was a blast we had 1 700 and 4-6 600's they were tough balls wouldn't react the same way twice. I will probally just drop me off and let her go play around somewhere. I heard that Mark L. is no longer at Bama. Shame I liked him when he was at Mobile but I am sure the Management had there reasons. I Hope Leland plays better that when I last played there it was a nightmare but I think they are using a mandated pattern if my memory serves me right. I am sure we will have fun. We are bring some of the best in our area that weekend.

It was so long since I was a regular at Bama that it predated anyone named "Mark L." being there. The guy who was there when I was (who will remain nameless) was a class-A jerk.

About the mandated pattern -- that's fine in theory but last year they "forgot" to re-oil between shifts of team at Lightning Strikes the first weekend, so they decided not to re-oil on subsequent weekends either "out of fairness." They were so dry and blown-apart by the time we got on them that we had a decent shot for five frames and then it went to hell. The anchor on the team we were paired with had shot 750-750 the day before in D&S at Riverview...he shot 530-something in team and had to finish his set with a Viz-a-Ball. I don't think I've seen a pattern hold up at state in a decade.

Good to know Florida is still a challenge. My first-ever state tournament game was there, and it was a whopping 98. That was way back in the polyester/urethane days. I think I still have the scoresheet.

Noticed in your profile about your all-events success in 1994 -- was that in Huntsville? If so, I finished 2nd that year in handicap all-events. Never have come close to bowling that well ever since.

The year I did so good it was at Dothan. It was my first year bowling I finshed the winter league with a 155 average. I spent all summer working with an old pba member her in Mobile he had me averaging 198 by the end of summer. I showed them the league sheet and ask them to consider a re-rate. They choose not to. I shot 670ish scratch and my handicap it was an 804. I lost to an 840 in singles. I shot 790 with the sticks in doubles my partner shots 415 with pins. We finsh 30th. I fell a part in doubles at the other house in dothan I shot 500 with pins. I hate they didn't re-rate me.

Somewhere around 95 or 96, Birmingham held it. Our team finished 8th. I shot 383. If I shoot my average, we finish 4th. If I shoot 50 over, we win it. Ask me how crappy I felt about that one.
