2nd Dimension as a Benchmark Piece?
« on: February 12, 2009, 10:50:15 PM »
Your thoughts please?
I know people have been commenting this ball isn't super angular partly because of the E.T.M Super Mica and the lower RG core,   so i was wondering with a pin down drilling,  could this be a benchmark type ball?

I guess it all depends on how you personally define benchmark ball.  Some people consider their benchmark ball to be a very even, controllable, moderate-hooking ball, usually a solid.  A handful of others view their benchmark ball as something that helps them read the lanes quickly by skidding in oil and snapping off friction.  (I've done this in a tournament with a polished, pin up Spit Fire before.  It let me know in a hurry where the friction was and where it wasn't!)

Since this is a very strong low RG pearl, I assume it won't be the best choice to be a middle-of-the-road control piece, but I don't really know.  However, I WILL be punching one up later tonight (most likely with a pin-up drill however), so I'll know more then I'm sure.

I wouldn't really classify the 2D as a benchmark ball..at least not for me..Mine is the Hy-Road.. When I throw the first couple of shots in practice, the Hy-Road's reaction tells me if I should stay put, go up, or go down.

What I want to know is if this ball is stronger overall than the Hy-Road.  If so, I wouldn't consider it a benchmark ball.  If only their motion is different for the most part, it wouldn't be impossible to use it as your benchmark, but it it just depends on what you look for in that type of ball.

My 2nd is about 2-3 boards stronger than my HY-Road.  No matter what the Storm ball reaction charts show the 2nd is better in oil than the HY-Road.

Just threw one game with my new Second Dimension on a pretty used up house shot last night.  The drill layout is identical to my solid Dimension, I left it polished, but knocked a little of the shine off with a worn 4000 abralon pad since the ball was skating badly in oil out of the box.  Once I put a touch of surface on top, the ball absolutely came to life.  This is in no way a benchmark ball -- despite being low RG and "smooth" for a pearl, it's very clean through the front part of the lane, and it revs up hard when it gets to the backend.  It isn't very angular per se when it makes its turn, but it's definately not a gentle arch either.  Also from what I can tell so far, it's a very, very strong ball.  I'm bowling in the Louisville City Tournament today, so I'll probably get more time to use it then and see what it can really do.

I might get this ball if I can figure out if it's stronger than my Rival, then polish my Rival to create a bigger difference between the two.

I just threw it this morning outstanding ball, smooth upfront and kicks in back really hard. Throws pins around well and strike percent was at least 75 percent when i threw it, if it left anything it was solid 8's and two smash 7 pins.
