Anyone else have a problem with this???
« on: June 11, 2006, 05:38:37 AM »
Now - before I get flamed - if this has been mentioned before, I haven't seen it - and I just did a search, and nothing was found.. so.. That said, here goes:

Where does Storm get off naming the scent of their new ball "agent orange"??? I know the BALL is called the AGENT, and the scent is ORANGE (as in citrus) - but why is storm trying to get positive attention from the deadly defoliant used in Vietnam?  So many guys have horrible diseases (cancer, heart attacks, etc), and their kids have birth defects from being sprayed with Agent Orange - I find it absolutely sick, and horrendously disrespectful to these soldiers.

Besides - the ball smells like citrus - does anyone at Storm know exactly what the chemical Agent Orange smells like?

PS I'm sure there are many OTHER bowlers (than just Mumzie and her husband) who were exposed to Agent Orange that are not thrilled by the name!

Which would be justifiable if it weren't for the fact that there was never an "Agent Orange" scent or name given to a bowling ball.  It's a BJ screwup, that's it.

I still want to know why no one complained when the Uranium, WMB, or S&A were released.

We are deeply sorry for upsetting anyone with the marketing materials of the  Agent bowling ball. This was an unfortunate coincidence and we certainly did not intend to offend any one.

On April 28th, we made the changes to the web site, as well as all future marketing materials, by replacing the word Orange with the word Citrus.  Again please accept our apologies.

Thank you for understanding.

Best wishes,

Probably in the same way they made the X-Factor, a red/blue ball, smell like chocolate...In other words....random.

Please, give up the conspiracy theories and find a new soapbox to stand on.  This is just foolish...It's not even called "orange" anymore...So you really have nothing to rant about...If storm was a bunch of sadistic people and though the "agent" and "orange" thing was hilarious, they wouldn't have changed the name of the scent to citrus.

Here's my take on it.

Cleaning Agent.

The smell of most cleaning agent's is orange.

Maybe I'm in right field but I can't imagine any company purposley trying to piss people off. I believe that it was just a coincidence.

Of course it was.  Righteous indignation is tough to pull off when you actually research the topic.  Much easier when it's a knee-jerk reaction.

Mumzie's well respected here and usually on the, umm, ball, but she didn't do what she should have done, which was check it out first.  Fifteen seconds of looking around would reveal that not only did Storm not call the scent "Agent Orange" in the first place, but that it's already been changed from plain "orange" specifically to keep reactionaries from making that connection.

Its a bit different calling a ball "tsunami" versus, say "hurricane katrina." In one instance, it is just the name of a natural occurances (abstract), while in another it is a specific event. This is where there is a problem with what storm originally called the scent (and i can clearly remember reading "agent orange" on the website and thinking "what dumbass came up with that idea for a name?").

Calling the scent "Agent orange" was/is a bad taste IMHO. I think it was correct to change the name into "Citrus".

nother example of "bad taste wording" are/were balls from Brunswick. Anyone remember the "Blitz" balls? I dunno which connotation you have with this in the US, but from my personal poit of view this is another pitfall of the bowling industry... Ebonite's V2 balls are close to bad taste for me, too, but not that serious. There was also a "little boy" ball from Azo some time ago, and I do not think that it got fans in Japan.

Calling a ball "Tsunami" is IMHO O.K.. There have been Quakes, Infernos, Tornadoes or Tremors around, and this is politically correct. But when it becomes specific, even not in a direct link with an "orange" scent on an "Agent" ball, then marketing has gone too far and damaged piety.

its just the name of a bowling ball.  If you don't like it, simply don't buy it.  This is actually some pretty good marketing by Storm.  It may be distasteful, but any form of publicity is good.  It might just be enough to get people to notice the ball.

Ok (RANT ON) So a ball that is called the agent and has an orange sent has enraged all u goody too shoes out there that put put two and two together and get five! I belive at the time of agent orange the full after effects of the chemical were not know to people and only became apparrent later! Maybe if you had of won that war the name agent orange would have not have stirred up such controversy.

Any one remember the FATMAN AND LITTLEBOY FROM AZO? Im pretty sure the death and destruction caused by those two bombs was greater tham the effects of agent orange even to this day! Im gussing in the eyes of you americans that was an acceptable attrocaty to imflict on tens of thousands of innocent people! I assume this because I have been a member here for many years and have never seen a post saying what a terrible name for a ball or why would any one name a ball after such terrible things. Please stop flaming everyone. This topic is about marketing pitfalls and (maybe) bad taste, but not about politics, especially from 60 years ago. That's a topic for another forum.

Nevertheless, we clearly see where thoughtless marketing leads...
