Anyone else have a problem with this???
« on: June 11, 2006, 05:38:37 AM »
Now - before I get flamed - if this has been mentioned before, I haven't seen it - and I just did a search, and nothing was found.. so.. That said, here goes:

Where does Storm get off naming the scent of their new ball "agent orange"??? I know the BALL is called the AGENT, and the scent is ORANGE (as in citrus) - but why is storm trying to get positive attention from the deadly defoliant used in Vietnam?  So many guys have horrible diseases (cancer, heart attacks, etc), and their kids have birth defects from being sprayed with Agent Orange - I find it absolutely sick, and horrendously disrespectful to these soldiers.

Besides - the ball smells like citrus - does anyone at Storm know exactly what the chemical Agent Orange smells like?

It's been brought up before and I really think it's just a bad coincidence.  They tried to make it a little better by refering to the scent as citrus rather than original scent of orange.

The scent isn't "agent orange" it's citrus(orange).  I'm not sure where you saw the scent listed as "agent orange"...

This month's Bowlers Journal has a review of the ball. This is called out.

And - as I said earlier - I tried to find out if there were a thread, but it didn't show up on the search. Thanks for the link.

I guess Agent Orange and it's effects are on my radar more than the average person's. I'm married to a Vietnam vet with lots of exposure to the chemical. He also has a ton of health problems (heart attack and bypass surgery at age 45, debilitating arthritis and other joint problems, knee replacement and pending hip replacement, outrageously high cholesterol, etc, etc. His combat unit is having their annual reunion this weekend - AND THEY ARE SPENDING THE ENTIRE WEEKEND DISCUSSING AGENT ORANGE AND THE HEALTH EFFECTS!!!!!

There are lots of guys who are really sick, dying, and/or already dead from this horrific chemical!

Im sure it was a COINCEDENCE...if they had intention of relating it to the chemical then they would have kept the scent "orange."  Its citrus now...

You know what?  I'll bet good money that, if the people at Storm had thought that it would be offensive in ANY way, that they would not have done it.

Also, at the FIRST hint of repercussion at the name Agent and the scent orange, they quickly changed the "name" of the scent to citrus.

A bad choice initially, to be sure, but it was corrected promptly.  Probably going to cause a bit of bad P.R. for Storm, but I cannot believe they would do this in a derogatory fashion.  I really find it hard to believe that they would intentionally cause anyone anger of hurt over something as silly as a bowling ball scent.

I am not a Storm defender, heck, the only Storm ball I still ahve is an old eraser from 6 yrs ago, but I have been told that their company is built on a reputation of customer service and satisfaction, so why would they intentionally damage what they have worked so hard to build up?

I think it was just either a bad , unthought out choice, or a unfortunate coincidence.

I am pretty sure the scent was never listed as "agent orange" but was actually just listed as orange.  It is an Agent that smells like orange.  There's a difference there.

Yes, there is a band called Agent Orange

On Storms website the ball was listed as "Agent" and on a seperate line the scent was called Orange.  As stated, when bowlers started making the leap to "Agent Orange" Storm recalled all teh boxes and promotional material that listed the scent as Orange and redistributed it as Citrus.  Think about how much money that probably cost them?  I don't know how Storm is set up, but I wouldn't be surprised is the department that come up the names for the bowling balls and the one that picks the scents are totally unrelated.

I'm of two minds on this. I'm fifty, I remember Vietnam and Agent Orange. I think Storm made a mistake putting the two together. It could be two different departments not coordinating properly, or, more likely I think, that the people involved just aren't old enough to remember Agent Orange, or even to have heard of it before and thus didn't think there would be any problem

On the other hand, Vietnam was 40 years ago. It think it's time to put it to rest. Agent Orange isn't like the concentration/death camps of the Nazi's. Just my two cents worth. But....again, I wasn't there, and having a lastng illness caused from that substance would certainly change my perspective on the issue. As I said at the beginning, Storm shouldn't have made the decision they did, and changing the name to citrus at least showed they are sensitive to the issue.

It would seem, then, that your complaint is really with BJ, not with Storm.  Storm didn't call the scent "Agent Orange".  They called it "orange", which, frankly, it is.

Out of curiosity, why wasn't Morich taken to task for calling its balls "Shock & Awe" by the families of soldiers killed overseas?  What about the people of Hiroshima or Nagasaki who well remember what Weapons of Mass Bia--err, Destruction did?  Or victims of radiation poisoning at Chernobyl or TMI when the Uranium came out?

It's not even the name of the scent though.  The name of the scent was orange.

I agree with Mumzie.

Offensive for a bowling ball!

OK for a band as a band name can be controversial!

A bowling ball should be positive and not offensive regarding such a very destructive compound!

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS I'm sure there are many OTHER bowlers (than just Mumzie and her husband) who were exposed to Agent Orange that are not thrilled by the name!
