Anyone polish a Prodigy?
« on: December 16, 2010, 06:18:19 AM »
Hi all,

I thinking of bringing the surface of my Prodigy up to 1500 grit polished.
Wondering if anyone else had done this or not.
I'm thinking it's going to be similar to the 2nd Dimension, maybe a little stronger.

It's not hitting the pins like I would like it too, sort of lackluster when it gets to the pocket.  Hopefully this would possibly make me throw a little straighter with more angle to the pocket.

Thanks!

Tburky,

Glad to hear a couple of others are seeing what I am out of this ball. I know that the word "particle" used to evoke negative postings and comments especially the ball death ones.

I might be one of the few around who does not mind having a ball that gives the reaction that particle gave. I do like to bowl on sport conditions and particle gave me better control until the condition settled down plus it let me stay out of trouble. I seem to remember some posters arguing that the hybrids would do the same as particle but my hybrids that are more pearl than solid are very snappy on the fresh. I have a Virtual energy that even oil soaked still jumps on the back end off the friction pretty well and this is with a weaker-for-me pin position and no weight hole.

I noticed in the link charlest posted that Bob Hanson noted that this acted like some of the particle pearls he had drilled in the past. The more I think about it, this makes much sense of what I am seeing also reaction wise. Good early roll but controllable like the Secret Agent. I used to bust out my Secret Agent when I needed a smooth reaction that didn''''t get me in too much trouble.

I haven''''t had a particle since my Shift and Secret Agent were retired a couple of seasons ago so my eyes are not used to the "particle" look anymore. Is anyone else seeing this when they see the Prodigy go down the lane?

Mike I do see that in the box finish. I was told that the prodigy cover has 2 different size loads of mica versus 1 load in the 2nd dimension. I have a prodigy that i lightly hit with 2000 ab then I shined it with reacta shine. Skids a lot more and pops on back. I am planning to drill another prodigy with a similar layout and a weight hole and shine it. The prodigy I have now I am putting on the spinner and lightly hit it on 4 sides with 2000 ab(smooth the cover a little) to see how it rolls. I do like this ball a lot...especially if I have surface on it on a fresh condition. Really blends lane nicely.

tburky,
Your thoughts make me want to try the 2000 Abralon-Reacta Shine before going through all the steps of 1500 grit polished (360----light 500----Storm Step 1----Storm Step 2).
We''ll do that and see how it goes.  I can always change it back if I don''t like it.

I suggest doing that ...you may like it. The thing to remember about the prodigy is that it has a 500 grit abralon base with 4000 on top. It is not really a true 4000 smooth surface. Always remember this...there is no rule stating you have to throw the ball at box finish. In my arsenal I have 2 balls that I throw that are box finish. The others I have tweeked the covers to match what my needs are in the arsenal. It is about matching up to your needs. There are some storm pearls I throw at box. But I like to give them some light surface and get a complete different reaction. Mainly 4000 ab on top of 1500 box and a lot of times I use 1000 or 2000 too. Also,I do this with roto grip equipment.

Thanks, I'm pretty knowledgeable about undergrit surfaces and ball surface prep. I got this ball used, so our first choice was to try the OOB surface, 500 abralon, then 4000 abralon over that.  I too have only a handful of balls with the OOB surface, it's all about matching to the lane conditions. I've been fighting this 44ft. THS trying to get everything to hook instead of working with it and straightening up on the shot. So, I'll try the 2000 grit with Reacta Shine and see how it does.

4000 abralon + polish, plus a light once over with a 4000 pad to knock the freshness off the cover. MONSTER. Ball motion was awesome....

I should put on here that I was going to try Xtra-Shine and not Reacta-Shine over the 2000 grit abralon.

Have a member on my Tuesday night team that recently drilled one up.  His first shot had no chance.  Even on our fresh house shot, he could not control it.  We put some Factory Finish over the stock surface and the ball is now one of his favorites.  Ball gets down the lane easier and makes a hard arcing motion continuously from the 40 foot mark all the way to the pocket.  He starts with a Ogre Particle, stock surface with Rough Buff and then switches to the Prodigy once the track starts to dry up.

Well, did the 2000 abralon then Xtra Shine and it helped alot!
Ball got down the lane and made a nice controllable hard move to the pocket, I was only able to use it for one game because of carry-down, but I like it a lot more now than I did at box finish.
I wonder if Factory Finish Polish would be a better choice than Xtra Shine though.

don't know...i used factory finish on equipment several years ago but they have changed the carrier in it and has not been the same for me. I use reacta shine and xtra shine.

Here I am on the other side of the spectrum, I am taking my surface down to 20 possibly lower, I am a stroker 15 mph lower revs, playing down and in right over the 9 board, box surface too speed sensitive for me but hell I only have 3 games on the ball, I will let it ride a bit, before thinking of dulling the ball up.

Well the Prodigy at 2000 Abralon and Xtra-Shine just slides to far down the lane. I thought it would be OK, but it's not quite what I'm looking for.

Couple of choices now.
1. Bring it to a 1500 grit polished ball like the OOB Storm 2nd Dimension
2. Take the surface back down to 2000 or 1000 and try Factory Finish Polish
3. any other suggestions?????

Thanks!
