Anyone polish a Prodigy?
« on: December 16, 2010, 06:18:19 AM »
Hi all,

I thinking of bringing the surface of my Prodigy up to 1500 grit polished.
Wondering if anyone else had done this or not.
I'm thinking it's going to be similar to the 2nd Dimension, maybe a little stronger.

It's not hitting the pins like I would like it too, sort of lackluster when it gets to the pocket.  Hopefully this would possibly make me throw a little straighter with more angle to the pocket.

Thanks!

Even on a high volume pattern in a tournament, I couldn't use the Prodigy out of box because it just plain rolled too early.  I had trouble getting it to the breakpoint.  I have used it at 1000 abralon with a light coat of polish to good success when there's some friction on the backends since I intended for it to be an even-rolling but strong benchmark ball. Pin is just over 5.5" from my axis under my middle finger, small x-hole just right of the thumb for a little more flare. Super smooth, great for playing outside angles on fresh oil. Unfortunately, my leagues have all been playing drier and drier as the season has gone on, and my Prodigy's had to sit in the bag for the most part. I've had to use higher pin stuff and move left with my feet.

I had the same problem my wasnt moving good leaving alot of single pins.  I was going to try to hit with 1000abr pad but I threw some polish and man that thing turned into a beast. I would try the polish it worked for me.

I'd take it to 4k then lightly polish

I left mine at 4000 and put some snake oil on it helps it get down the lane a little further

Thanks for the responses, I'm gonna check out that video on the surface changes.  It's a longer THS pattern (44ft.), but I think putting some polish and playing a little straighter will work.  It's at 4000 abralon right now.

I put some Storm Extra on mine without changing the underneath. This ball still hooks quite a bit early for me.

I am going to see if we have a good used 4000 abralon pad in the shop. I took a T-Road solid back to its box finish of 1000 and then hit it with the used 4000. This made it get thru the front easier and still had some energy stored up for the big finish.

FWIW, I just saw the notes on the Prodigy on this website,
http://www.ballreviews.com/Reviews/Reviews.asp?ManufacterID=11&BallID=1059
and it says the Prodigy uses the 500/4000 surface finish process.

That is very aggressive, and not a true 4000 grit finish. This could be your problem. If so, I'd recommend trying the true 4000 grit finish first before applying polish. To do that sand it first with 500 grit, then with 1000 grit, then with 2000 and finally with a 4000 grit pad. This finish will normally give you much more length than the 500/4000 grit process and a more controllable backend.

If this doesn't give you what you think you need, then take it at least to true 2000 grit and then apply a light coat of polish.

My Prodigy is polished an drilled pin 5-7/8" to PAP above fingers for lower flare.  It works great on extreme wet-dry since it comes off the dry easy, but still has enough to play in the oil.

I noticed in the link charlest posted that Bob Hanson noted that this acted like some of the particle pearls he had drilled in the past. The more I think about it, this makes much sense of what I am seeing also reaction wise. Good early roll but controllable like the Secret Agent. I used to bust out my Secret Agent when I needed a smooth reaction that didn't get me in too much trouble.

I haven't had a particle since my Shift and Secret Agent were retired a couple of seasons ago so my eyes are not used to the "particle" look anymore. Is anyone else seeing this when they see the Prodigy go down the lane?

My last Particle ball was the X-Factor Trifecta, and now that you mention it, it does roll pretty similar.  I never got a chance to use it much before selling it.  The Prodigy coverstock is R2X Pearl Reactive with E.T.M.
Which I assume is some sort of additive to the coverstock similar to Particle.  The word Particle has gotten a bad name the last couple of years, so they just change it to make it sound more appealing.

Instead of doing the Polish over a 2000 or 4000, I'm going to bring the coverstock to a 1500 grit polished and see what happens, I like the reaction I see in video's of the 2nd Dimension, there pretty close, same coverstock, Prodigy with a stronger core.

Mike I do see that in the box finish. I was told that the prodigy cover has 2 different size loads of mica versus 1 load in the 2nd dimension. I have a prodigy that i lightly hit with 2000 ab then I shined it with reacta shine. Skids a lot more and pops on back. I am planning to drill another prodigy with a similar layout and a weight hole and shine it. The prodigy I have now I am putting on the spinner and lightly hit it on 4 sides with 2000 ab(smooth the cover a little) to see how it rolls. I do like this ball a lot...especially if I have surface on it on a fresh condition. Really blends lane nicely.

tburky,
Your thoughts make me want to try the 2000 Abralon-Reacta Shine before going through all the steps of 1500 grit polished (360----light 500----Storm Step 1----Storm Step 2).
We'll do that and see how it goes.  I can always change it back if I don't like it.

I'm not sure this will help you but I left mine at box finish and tryed it and rolled out and so I had a friend who owns a pro shop tell me to clean it and then polish it and so I did this and right after the polish I had a 700 series. It goes through the head smoother and I have a ball layout to go long which helped but it hits better than my mission or invasion.  For me the polish got the ball to go long and hit like a tank. I hope this helps you out for I was ready to give up.
