I am an older tweener.  14-15 mph speed.  I have to soften my shot when I go deep.  I use a Storm Nano, polished for most of my leagues.  If the oil is real heavy, I use a sanded (500) Columbia 300 World beater and keep it on a tighter line.  For the nationals, I used my World Beater for team and my outburst for doubles/singles.  They are going to be fresh oil for every squad this year, so you should only have to change balls between doubles/singles, if at all.  Good Luck.

The balls that match up best depend on the blend of the pattern.  Last year the pattern was a touch longer, but symmetrical cores tended to match up better overall.  I threw a HyRoad in team event and had a great look, my asymmetrical stuff was too much in practice and wouldn't change direction downlane.

That being said it's impossible to say what would work best for Natls this early.  If you're looking for an oiler though nothing is earlier than the Nano.  In general I heard of very few people using balls like that last year with much success.

I had 500-plus the last 2 games of team with a pin-up NANO.  Wish I'd had a pin down NANO for the first game.

Riggs would you agree though that in general hook monsters didn't work well last year?  I thought I remember one of your blogs saying something like that (or at least that symmetricals seemed to roll better on the fresh).  I was referring to people throwing balls that "hook" early, meaning they drill something with a strong core, strong pin, lots of surface.  I am imagining that a slightly weak pin 4.5" or 5" on a Nano with a touch of surface knocked off would bounce off the track nicely once you opened it up.  What are your thoughts?

I thought the fresh oil for every squad starts in 2013. Riggs, do you have any clarification?

Last year my Alpha Max at 2000 was very good, but the guy rolling it wasn't very sharp. I suspect that my Nexus solid will be the ticket on team event this year. In the Storm line-up I would expect to see lots of the Nano solid and the Roto Grip Defiant.

I didn't bowl great last year (missed too many spares), but I had a good look with a pin right-of-ring red Mission on team and pin-up HyRoad on D/S.

Riggs can verify, but I do not believe this to be correct.  2012 will be the same as years past, just fresh for team.  2013 and thereafter should have fresh for every squad.

You may be right about fresh oil every squad not starting till next year.  I have a lot of senior moments.

For the past two years, there has been plenty of friction for me (a tweener myself) to use a Brunswick Wicked Siege with a fresh 4000 pad on it and the year before that, a C-System 2.5/Evil Siege. All pin up with my heavy ball roll.  Those were the strongest balls in my bag because the oil tends to move and disapate pretty quick so I could ball down pretty quick after practice and halfway through game 1.  In singles/doubles, I never used more than a Damage.

Not sure what we'll see in Baton Rouge, but I would recommend tuning into some of the webcasts, reading Riggs blog, and keeping up to date on here with all the chatter about how to play the pattern.  Typically, they even do an interview with the guy giving lessons (Jasnau at the Stadium, Bill Hall this year) that can be very informative because they see all kinds of players come through on their lessons pair using the tournament pattern.  The more information you can compile and apply to the way you throw the ball, the better idea you'll have going into the tournament and the better you can prepare your arsenal to compete.  So many bowlers underestimate the value of studying what works and doesn't work for others before they themselves head down to compete.  Even a practice session on the Tournament pattern could be a possibility if you have a proprietor will to run it for you.  We do and it gives us a good bit of confidence heading down.  They also have practice pairs available this year for purchase.

I would agree with this! An old tweener like me just needed the power of the NANO :D

And FRESH OIL does not start until 2013. There should be an announcement of details in January, so people know squad times and all that before entries for 2013 open in February.

Pretty sure the way your group breaks them down and the level of players you guys are Riggs you could have shot 500+ the last two with a (insert any Storm ball here) :)  You were just being a good company guy...lol.
