First Storm Ball

I'm thinking about purchasing my first storm ball in the near future, mostly because I want to try something new.  I've basically been throwing ebonite for the past year and a half, except for my Black Widow and Twisted Fury being the only exceptions.

My Black Widow is what i use for heavy oil and my other stuff is basically used for Medium Oil/Broken Down lane conditions.  I think I'm going to go for something that has a good midlane read with a strong backend finish.  Note that I don't mean some that skid/flips.  My Twisted does that.  For the record, I currently throw a Whirlwind, Angular One, Big One, and a Twisted Fury.  I also have a No Limit but I hardly use it because it's really weak.

Anyways, I haven't been too happy with my Big One lately, so I guess I'm looking for something to replace it, but just a little weaker.  Plus it's 14 lb and I'm moving up to 15 so I could use something in its place.  

Any suggestions?  I was thinking of a Spit Fire or a T-Road Pearl myself, but I'm curious of other opinions.

troad pearl is talked about highly on here and is supposed to b a pretty good ball.

Yeah I noticed.  I wish someone that throws it would come here and tell me how it rolls.  I'm not really looking for something that flips though, so I hope there's some Storm balls that are a little more even but still somewhat strong.

The Spit Fire is probably want you are looking for then.  It will be a bit smoother than the T-Road Pearl, and will be weaker than something like a Gravity Shift.  A Thunderstruck Pearl may also work.

Hmm, am I not remembering what the Big One was?  I thought it was more of an oil ball.

You are correct sir. Replacing the Big One with something that "has a good midlane read with strong backend finish" sounds like the T-Road solid or SureFire(a little weaker) to me and not a pearl.IMHO

Replacing the Big One could be the Cell.  I know its Roto Grip, but it would work well.  The T-Road Solid is also a great ball.

By "Replacing the Big One", I didn't actually mean something that does the same thing.  I don't think mine really exemplifies what a Big One Should do, plus it's 14 lb.  So, since I'm moving up to 15, I'm really just looking for something to put in my bag instead.

I figured the Spit Fire of all the Storm balls would fit my description of what I'm looking for the best.  That's one of the balls I'm really considering for sure.

That's why I thought of something weaker.  It sounds like your Big One has lost some of its hook, and you wanted something slightly less aggressive than even that.  The Spit Fire will definately be a little weaker, but it also does need some friction.  Knocking the polish off it might give you an even better look if you want to keep it from being too strong on the back.  However, if you want something even smoother, but with a little more ability to handle oil, a Sure Fire might work well.  Same core, but a solid/pearl hybrid coverstock.  Very smooth, very versatile!

I love my Thunderstruck Solid for the reaction you are talking about. I have mine drilled pin below the ring finger. Nice midlane reaction and nice pop on the back.

I'm looking at the diagrams on stormbowling.com and I like the line of the Spit Fire.  I'm basically something between a Stroker and a Tweener if that helps.  The Sure Fire's coverstock is cool but I think it's got a little too much hook for me.  Then again, I suppose the Spit Fire could over react in certain dry spots too.  I'm just assuming by Medium Oil in the diagrams that they mean today's standard House Shots, since at my local bowling alley they've been putting more oil down than usual.  If that's the case, the Spit Fire seems a lot like my Whirlwind, but hooks earlier.  I suppose that's the closest thing I'm looking for, so that's probably what I'll be getting if I get a Storm ball.

As for the Thunderstruck, I've only seen one in action, but it seems like more of a medium-dry lane ball to me.  I haven't really been impressed.  then again, I'll bet the one I saw has a very different layout.  I'll look at it next time I see it.

i would try either a rapid fire, sure fire, or thunderstruck solid. out of those, though, i'd go with a rapid fire.

If you are looking for something that will adjust to medium oil to heavy oil with slight surface change or 4000 to 2000 Abralon, and is the smoothest rolling ball in the Storm line. I would suggest thinking about the Special Agent.
