Fusion vs Lights Out
« on: March 24, 2014, 12:25:41 AM »
Trying to determine if the Lights Out could be a step down from the Fusion or would they be very similar being they both utilize the same cover?

Yes.
Mainly due to the fact that the Fusion has a much lower RG and a lower RG Differential, for most of the ball weights. Once you get down to 14 lb. balls, the difference in RG differential is less significant, but the difference in RG is greater.

If you drilled the Fusion normal (3.5 - 4.5" pin-PAP and medium VAL angle) and if you drilled the LO with a longer pin-PAP (5 - 5.5") and shorter/smaller VAL Angle, when the lanes get too dry for the Fusion and its drilling won't let you play deeper, the LO  should enable you to move deeper and make a strong turn in the back.

Thinking of buying another Lights Out?

I bought my son a Fusion and with his rev rate he just can't keep it on the right side of the pocket even on a fresh shot.  He wants me to get him a drop down and he wanted me to look in the Storm family.  I know that the Fusion and LO both use the Hy-Road cover and I didn't know if the core would make that much of a difference in getting him some additional length.

He has the Fusion and then his next ball down is the Chainsaw SOS (a new Cherry one and an oil soaked original blue one).

I was also looking at the Uproar but the distributors have been out for a while.

I'd suspect that the higher Rg will get him additional length BUT unless his ball speed has increased, it will also get him lots more backend. Maybe a large VAL angle, like 50 - 60 degrees would help him control it better???

The Uproars I have seen have lots of backend; for Anthony I doubt if it will be a lot different than a Lights Out.

I wonder if a Rumble, taking the surface to a full 3000 or 4000 (500/1000/2000/3000-4000), wouldn't be better for him. It should be more controllable than a Fusion or a Lights Out or an Uproar.

I bet he'd do well with a Track 505C2.

Take the Fusion to 4,000.  It is almost like a different ball.

His Fusion has a large VAL angle already, 60 degrees.

Me too but he's stubborn like his mother.

The shop is getting in Uproars this Thursday so I ordered 2 (you know I had to try one also).  If that don't work I'll change the surface of his Fusion to 4000 and give that a try.

NHL and vkowalski, thanks for the comments.

My Fusion has the pin in the middle finger which puts it 5" from my PAP and 55* val angle. It also has a large DT hole. It still grabs in the mids and finishes very strong.

My Uproar has the pin in the ring finger which puts it at 3.75" from my PAP and 50* Val angle. It has a small hole 1" below my midline on the val. It is nowhere near as strong as my Fusion until they really break down. At that point it conserves so much energy it's actually sharper at the break.

My Rumble is 3.5 pin to pap with a 35* Val angle. It has a very large p3 hole. I have it at 2000 Sia and it is definitely smoother than my Uproar. It reads the mids enough to tame it a little but it's still a nice step down.

JS,

Maybe you should tell people how severely rev dominant your son is.
(Folks, I've seen him bowl and I'm shocked there's enough oil anywhere for him to able to use a Fusion.)

It sounds like the ball was not punched for a rev dominant bowler. And not knowing how coachable your son is, maybe you can work with him to match his speed and rev rate up to help him excel for years to come.

+1 with Mr Straight Ball. I may not have as much respect as all the other posters on BR, but this is a very true statement. I consider myself to be an upcoming star on the bowling lanes across the the state of IL. in high school. My game has become so much better since I was able to increase my speed. I am still rev dominant, but not as bad as I used to be. i went from 16 mph to 19 mph.
