Hyroad/Crossroad comparison?
« on: January 17, 2012, 10:39:34 AM »
Can anyone please compare the Hyroad and the Crossroad? I know it has not come out yet but I know some of the staffers certainly have thrown it. I'm looking for a compliment to my Hyroad for when I lose the heads. I'm hoping this ball will be just that.

Damn man, relax. Ball is weeks away and youre looking for concrete comparisons? Sheesh. Anyway, if youre losing the front part of the lane with the Hyroad I highly doubt a Crossroad will be a compliment, moreso a replacement.

Crossroad will be an upgrade to your Hyroad. The core in the Victory balls are a little stronger than the cores in the Hyroad and T-Road balls. If you want to ball down to get through the front easier, go to a 2Fast, or a  Tropical Heat pearl or hybrid. Those balls will have less cover than your Hyroad.
You could also go with a Frantic which is a tiny bit less ball then the HyRoad, but has the same cover as the Hyroad. The core in the Frantic will produce less flare than your Hyroad.

Tommy -

Being a Hy-Road and a Victory Road ball owner (and a big fan of each), I am having trouble understanding what the new Crossroads is bringing to the table as compared to the Victory Road and Hy-Road.  I understand that the Crossroads has the beefier Victory Road core with the Hy-Road hybrid coverstock (all with a 1500 polished finish).

IMHO, I find my Hy-Road to be a great benchmark ball with good midlane read and controllability and not too affected by carry down.  On the other hand, my Victory Road is condition specific requiring dry backends to flaunt its strong, angular move in the dry.  Both work best in medium conditions for me and I have both drilled about the same in the 65 x 4ish by 35 range (My bowling style is rev dominant, avg speed with a 15 tilt and approx 45-55 degree rotation).

So, that said, what would I expect from the Crossroad?  Assuming drilling layouts being reasonably equal, would the Crossroads be a stronger midlane read than the Hy-Road because of the stronger core or and less angularity at the back end than the Victory Road because of the hybrid coverstock. . . . or something else?

Thanks,

MK

This is something I have yet to understand with the hybrid balls Storm produces. Looking at core specs, there shouldn't be much difference between the hyroad, frantic, and Reign supreme. However, people say there are big differences even with the same drilling. This leads me to believe that the hybrids have a different blend, from ball line to ball line, even though storm doesn't publish it.

I need a new ball, and was interested in the frantic until this ball was released.

Similar numbers before drilling don't mean the reaction will be the same.  The core shapes are different, and are affected differently when holes are put in them.

Bowlers tend to feel think or see certain bowling balls to react differently merely by their visual perception. You cannot make a statement such as that unless you the proper test. You have to all the bowling balls laid out the same thrown the same amount of times and try to have a controlling condition. Then check the results on CATS. Trusting your own visual perceptions will tend to be false more times than not. Color lends itself to create a different perception of ball motion than is actually happening.

To the OP....what you're describing is a perfect case where you need a Victory Road Pearl.  If the heads are going you wouldn't want a piece with the same coverstock, is it would tend to read a similar section of the pattern.  You would want similar core dynamics with a weaker cover.  That would be my suggestion....

I think saying the Frantic and Hyroad have the same core is a bit of a stretch.  The cores have a very different shape, which gives the core different tendencies when the axis migrates.  I think the Frantic holds its axis a little longer, making it's shape a little stronger at the end.  I am a KISS kind of guy though....and realize that cover is 80% of overall ball motion....so....lol

Counting plugging and re-drilling differently, I tried 5 HY-ROADs and consistently found it to be an all-or-nothing ball for me. Got to the pocket fine most of the time but too hard most of the time - lots of solid 9s and ring 10s. One notable success with a HY-ROAD was last 5 games of minors in 2009 USBC OC with about 230 over.

Also 3 REIGN SUPREMES and love it. Still in my arsenal. Much less "sudden" at the break point and smoother/more controllable.

FRANTIC has been my top ball after transition since I drilled it in September. Much more skid/flippy than either but without being "sudden" at the breakpoint. Reminds me of a FIRED UP but stronger. Have won a ton with the FRANTIC.

There is no doubt these balls are very different even with same coverstock.

Riggs -  Ditto on the all or nothing for the Hy Road.  Even though I like the ball, I tend to agree that it can be too strong to the pocket at times.

Would you mind sharing how you drilled your Reign Supreme and how you throw the ball (rev dominate vs speed dominant, etc)?

Thanks
