Invasion
« on: May 25, 2010, 09:14:42 AM »
I finally got to throw an Invasion today and it was unreal.  Those that said this ball was junk and over rated need to try it again with something different on it.  After throwing this ball I'm going to change my arsonal for the fall Midwest Regional season.  I threw two with different layouts and surfaces and wow.  The first one was a 4 x 5 with a 3 inch buffer and factory finish.  Tried on the Scorpion patter and playing 15 to 8 where I play with my Mutant, and left the big four.  I had to move 3 and 1 then boom, and carry was great.  Invasion # 2 was a 5 x 4 1/2 with 2 inch buffer and factory finish.  Went a little longer but still read the mids good and coverd more boards on the back.  Then I took # 2 down to 2000 with a mid polish and got more lenght and a late midlane raed with increased backend.  See my profile for my specs.

I will be going with and all Storm lineup:
I may chage layouts some but will use these for starting points.

Invasion #1 with a strong roll for fresh patters
Invasion #2 with a 5 x 4 1/2 and factory finish
Invasion #3 with same layout as #2 and 2000 mid polish
Prodigy     with a 5 x 5 polished finish
Hyroad      with 4 1/2 x 5 for Viper pattern
Hyroad      with 5 x 5 1/2 for Cheetah
Reign       with skid flip layout
Heat        with skid flip layout
Ice         spare ball

Interesting lineup.  Have you seen the Prodigy in action yet?  It looks like the same cover as the Virtual Energy with a different core.
I have seen the Invasion very briefly in action and it's pretty strong.  Having 3, I assume you are able to keep an "easy" hand.  I like the Hyroads so it's nice to see this there as well.
Looks like you've got most everything covered, except maybe a urethane ball.
What condition makes you bring the Heat out?

It's actually the Second Dimension cover with an upgraded core.  I think its asymetrical, but I'm not for sure.  I haven't seen it in person but I know someone that has thrown it, and he says close to the Mutant Pearl.  I'm not dead set on 3 Invasions yet, but I know for sure 2 of them.  Both with the same layout but one at 4000 and the other 2000 polished.  A polished Invasion works great on the long patterns once you get carrydown because it clears the midlane better with a stronger move on the back.  As far as the Heat goes it's a good skid flip ball when you can't get nothing else down the lane.  I bowled a 10 game sweeper not to long ago and by the 9th game it came in handy, but I may replace it with the Natural because I don't use the Heat that much.

After doing some more practice and research I have decided to make a few changes in my initial lineup.  Three Invasions is going to be over doing it and too big of a gap between the polished Invasion and Prodigy.  I chose the VG because I liked that ball with and without polish.  Polished it has a late midlane read and strong backend for carrydown.  I know I could have just went with a VE instead but the VE for me was unpredictable on longer patterns.  It wanted to read too soon at 4000 and too late polished.  The only pattern I found the VE to work good on was a 38-40ft house shot where you could swing it, and some shorter patterns with carrydown.  Hopes this helps some others looking for a Storm lineup.

New 8 ball lineup looks something like this.

Invasion- 4 1/2 x 4 at 4000 for long/heavy fresh shots
Invasion- 5 x 5 at 2000 polish for longer carrydown and fresh Chameleon for deeper angles
VG- 5 x 5 at 2000 polish for medium carrydown
Prodigy- 5 x 4 at 2000 polish Viper with carrydown
Hyroad- 5 x 5 1/2 for length and tamer backend for Cheetah (fresh backend)
Hyroad- 4 1/2 x 5 for stronger midlane/flair for Viper (fresh backend)
Reign- 5 x 4 at 2000 polish for cheetah with carrydown
Probably fill this with a weaker skid/flip or urethane

No I don't use a high gloss on solid balls because it takes the midlane out.  I put a light to mid polish on over either a 2000 or 4000 surface.  2000 gives it a little more bite in the and the polish still allows it not read so early in the midlane.  On the longer patterns (over 40ft) I like the ball to start reading around 37-39 ft once you start getting carrydown.  I found if it reads any sooner then this it will have trouble carrying.  The light polish gives you that few extra feet.
