IQ Tour vs IQ Tour Fusion....why am I seeing this?
« on: November 04, 2015, 07:14:17 PM »
Bought a IQ Tour Fusion last year and it worked really well at one house but not the other.

Bought a IQ Tour (always wanted one) this year and it's been my main ball at both leagues, but I will pull out the Fusion at times.

Question is.....why am I seeing the Fusion get into a roll earlier than the Tour?
Both are drilled about the same (IQ Tour 43 x 4.5 x 45 and Fusion 41 x 4 1/8 x 40)

Does the 3/8's longer pin really cause this?

Because it does.  :)

My Fusion starts up earlier than my Tour also. Why ask why??After being a ball whore for too long, some comparisons defy explanations. It is what it is…..

Is it really picking up earlier or are you just seeing a quicker response from the Fusion

The dual color scheme is making the ball appear to rev up earlier with the low RG of the core. It's an illusion seeing the tumbling colors of a dual color ball vs. a dark solid.

The IQ Fusion is a hybrid which is pearl and solid together. Check on Stormbowling website. Same type of core in the pearl as the solid.
I hate ten pins but love the game of bowling with just the right ball to take them out.

Surface preparation could also have an impact here. Were both balls left at box finish, or have you changed the surface grits at all? My IQ Tour Solid definitely started up sooner than the Fusion for me, but that's because I kept my Tour at 1000 or 2000, and I kept the box finish on the Fusion.

Good point and I can see this as I have gotten use to the solid ball since I have been throwing it the most this year. But is this really the case if the Fusion ends up left of Tour at the pins?

Yes,  Gene they have....both had a light by hand cleaning with 3000 using clean and dull.

I'm certain the Fusion picks up earlier. The Tour responds to friction further down the lane.

I will say the two balls are not drilled identically. The Fusion is pin below the ring, while the Tour has the pin directly above the ring. Otherwise, same drill pattern -- no weight hole. I don't believe there is enough difference in drill to account for the reaction difference I'm seeing.

I haven't touched the cover on the Fusion, while I've had the Tour at 1000, 1500, and 2000. But it doesn't matter what prep I've had on the Tour. It's still further down lane before it makes it's move. I was watching a friend who also has the two balls alternate between them in league last night. I was seeing the same relative reaction differences.

Look, I'm not a newbe. My last Regional cash was with the Tour. I understand the ball very well. It's the reason I choose the Tour over the Fusion when the mids started to go three games into the block. I'm not seeing things, and I'm not tricked by color.  :)

The lower pin will have some minor impact in making the ball start early, but as you say, layout is a much smaller impact than surface on ball reaction.  I have really liked my original IQ tour from day one but have taken the surface up to 4000 then put a balance hole on the axis over time.  It didn't take much increase in surface to start seeing more length out of the ball.  In fact just lane polish from box condition increased the length noticeably.

I haven't used the fusion, but watched a lot of guys look good using it at the last senior high roller 18 months ago.  I would have probably drilled one up then but got a good look playing in the same area with a Marvel Pearl.  I also owned the pearl IQ, but found it to be terribly over under.  For whatever reason slightly different shell formulas seem to really react differently on that core.  While on paper it looks like the Fusion should get more length I think there may be conditions where it starts earlier but has more continuation.  Cant explain it, but it doesn't really surprise me.

Do you think the IQ 30th's shell will be addressed on your findings....because from what I have read, many others felt the same way.

Good observation. The solid cover on the Tour isn't extremely aggressive OOB. That's actually the allure of the ball, and what makes it so popular as a control piece across medium conditions. I found with even a little use after a fresh cover prep, the ball picks up noticeable lane oil and does accentuate the length even further.

Maybe the pin down on my Fusion has more impact than I'm realizing. I don't know if what I'm seeing between the Tour solid and the Fusion is an absolute. Clearly, other see it different. But I do know what I'm seeing is real.  :D

I have seen the IQ Tour push more than a Fusion on the same conditions with both OOB.
