Lock carry stinks so far
« on: February 22, 2016, 08:53:49 AM »
I really love the way my Lock rolls but I never have had such bad carry since I bought a new ball. Many different houses (THS) and still the same result. I have ball drilled pin up and have been using in OOB. Last night I switched to a pin down Ride and moved way out and shot 267 with the front 8.  Amazing what a different ball will do for your carry. Also have a fight drilled same as Lock and the carry isn't much better. Thinking of polishing both my Lock and Fight to see if that helps with the carry. I hate to plug a new ball and re drill pin down,  but might have to with these new balls. I like to play right in the track so maybe some polish will help solve the problem. I bought the Ride mainly for spares but that ball sure hits hard. Has me thinking about drilling more stuff pin down and adding some polish. Looking for some opinions on anybody that has polished the Lock and or the Fight. As a last resort I guess I can plug them and change to a pin down drilling.

If the Ride was working, you're probably not on the right conditions for a Lock or Fight OOB.

Surface is 70% of the ball reaction from what others have stated here. I feel you should always adjust the surface prior to re-drilling or giving up on a ball. More than likely, you are not encountering enough oil for the OOB finishes of these.

Yes I would agree with that. I just hate to have 2 new balls that I hardly use or when I do can't seem to put any big scores together. I was just wondering if I polish both balls up if maybe that is the answer to using them more. If I hit a tournament with some heavy oil I can always bring both balls down to what surface I need with the abralon pads I carry. Tough to polish at tournament but pretty easy to dull up before scoring starts.

I can also take my IQ Tour Nano down to 1000 and just bring it for tournaments. That way I can use the Lock and Fight both polished up. Frustrating when your spare ball (Ride) out carries all your new stuff. Sometimes I am too stubborn to start out with the Ride and I try to force the Lock or Fight to start with. Kind of like when I was a kid and got a new toy. Kind of unfair to my teammates in league play.

If a ball works, it works. It doesn't matter that it's not the newest one you bought. If your Ride is working that well, I doubt polishing the Lock will help. Polishing the Fight could help.

I love my Ride and so far like the Fight a lot. I still have my Fight in OOB condition, for me it is a perfect step up from my Ride

If the Ride was working, the Fight and Lock were too much ball.

Did you watch big Wes throw the Lock last week? Ball rolled really well and hit awesome for him. I was very impressed as I usually hate pearls and hybrids that contain pearl on any type of volume.

Moral of story: Sometimes you have to throw the inexpensive stuff because that is what the lane is giving you. You can't force the lane to take a higher friction ball.

I polished up the Lock and Fight and had great results with the Fight tonight.  Sometimes a little polish does the trick. Amazing how different the ball rolled with a little polish.

Polish and higher grit abralon does wonders reducing friction and getting the ball down the lane. Shows there is not enough volume or the pattern is not long enough for the Lock.

I bought a lock,  my third bowling ball, my third year bowling, 206 avg. other two balls a lucid and taboo.  The lock was so strong I had it polished as high as they could after two weeks I thought I made huge mistake.  A month later, It has changed my game, my average is up ten pins and if I took my average with just the lock it's probably 20 higher than my old average.   I get away with more misses that still strike but it also seems to work in most lane conditions/patterns  and going to different houses, but I haven't had anything super dry yet.  I throw between 16 to 17 mph with high revs.  Have no idea how it's drilled but it didn't work at all until it was polished now I'm so happy couldn't even tell you best decision ever

If you are more of a medium speed, medium revs guy, the Lock in  box condition is probably not a good matchup on a THS.  Basically the aggressiveness of the ball tends to force you deeper, and unless you are a high rev guy the ball covers too many boards for your rev rate causing a lot of 10 pins.  I had almost the same issue with a box condition Paradox that wouldn't hit a lick in my house shot league.  I took it to 4000, put a bit of polish on it and my carry went through the roof because I didn't have to play as much out angle through the heads.

Alternatively if the Ride lets you stay outside that may be a better option for league even though I would still keep the Lock polished.

When I first got this ball I left it oob. It was horrible, I thought I had made a mistake. Now for tournament shots or where higher volumes of oil are, this may be fine. But for the THS  I had mine polished and adjusted the cover to 2k. Now this ball is $. This has been, by far the BEST ball I have bought in a while ( and I have bought a lot). I can't express how good this ball is, at least for me. I hope Storm comes out with a solid and a pearl with this core.

just out of curiosity but considering most ths shots are med-light volumes of oil why would you use a ball thats supposed to be used on heavier volumes of oil or on sport shots why not buy a ball thats more so intended for med to light volumes of oil or 1that fits your ths shot. im not trying fire anybody up but just saying why would tou buy a hook monster made for heavier volumes and kill it down to handle ths when u can buy a weaker ball and also save money in the process.

Because a lot of people don't think about that. Your average league bowler wants to buy the newest hype there is plus getting a better high end ball will help them score

yeah its all pipe dreams lol either way the op solves his own problem by using the ride which is more suited for ths than the lock the results were better scores. either way its just a matter of knowledge and using your equipment for whats its intended for.
