Looking for a ball...
« on: September 24, 2005, 03:54:22 PM »
I'm looking for a Storm ball to fill a current void I may have in my arsenal. Here's the low-down:

1. Storm Triple Xtreme
2. *** VOID ***
3. Storm Screamin' Banshee
4. Brunswick Power Groove Dry/R
5. Hammer Big Blue Spare

I think there's a gap between my Xtreme and my Screamin' Banshee (although the Banshee is VERY versatile and typically works on everything from med-heavy to light oil, but seems to have trouble with carrydown).

Does anyone have suggestions as to what Storm ball would fit between these two?? Do I even have a void to fill here?? HELP!

Is there a void...I would say so.

Do you need something to fit in between there...well that depends on what you adjustments are when switching between the two.

I would think about what reaction you don't have that you would want, not just filling a slot.  But if I were to try and fill that slot I would think about a Diablo.

I'd suggest you look at the Fired Up or if you like the Banshee line, the Ragin' would also fit, kinda up to you and how much/little adjustments you want to make, as Goof1073 stated above.

Well, to respond... Both the Xtreme and the Banshee (and Dry/R on a dry lane) have a smooth midlane with a strong backend if played on the proper condition. Neither of these balls "snap" very much on the backend and neither is set up to go super long before the hook. This creates a void for carry-down. A snappy backend ball seems to be what I'm missing.

Since you need a ball for carry down I would go with a dull ball...

Okay... now I don't know if I agree with this comment, and I'll tell you why. Typically, in the house I'm bowling predominantly right now (and in MOST houses for that matter), if the oil has carried-down to the back-end in league play, it's due to heavy play on that particular line. This also means that the lane itself PRIOR to the back-end has been pretty well cooked. So this leaves us with a fairly dry lane AND a carried-down backend. Ick. Now, a dull ball is going to burn up all it's energy on this dry part of the lane, which will cause it to lose it's "snap" through the crap on the backend. So, it either won't hit pocket or it will hit light and act like a wet sack of sh!t in the pocket.

On the other hand, I could get something like the Diablo and POLISH it up a bit to make it longer so it doesn't burn up and still cuts through the backend. Any thoughts?

I'd have to second Jerkoff's suggestion.  Out of all the possibles in Storm's lineup, that looks to be the best.  Same core as your Screamin, and polished as well.  I think you'd get a similar look, but have the extra on the backend.  You'll have to move left I'm pretty sure, but it ought to fit nicely between the Xtreme and Screamin.  I don't think you'd be happy with the Diablo or Fired Up though, they roll too early.  I can't really see anything in Storm's line right now that would give you the fit that you're after.  Maybe a Depth Charge with a weak drilling, but I think that one would still roll way too early.  The Diablo would overlap with your Screamin, definitely, especially since you'd have to polish it.  The Fired Up is a skid/snap demon, so carrydown I think will give you the same problems with it that you have with your Banshee.

Cool, well so far it's looking like either the Fired Up or the Ragin' Banshee. The numbers on the Ragin' are very similar to my Screamin', but the coverstock is VERY different, so it could/should provide a stronger backend reaction. Both of these options will have to be drilled and treated to give a LATE reaction to be successful on carry-down, as they both tend to have an earlier mid-lane reaction on a medium oil condition.

And I must echo D Pat... What about the ACE? I've seen some good things on the reviews, but haven't heard much here locally. Would this fit or would the ACE be too aggressive? It looks like it just might fit...

I hated my Ace, it was an over/under flippy/squirty piece of crap.  From what I've seen of them though, they're either really smooth or like mine was.  They're weaker than they're supposed to be, so I doubt it'll be too much ball.
