Looking for recommendations
« on: January 23, 2014, 11:17:03 AM »
First post, been lurking on here for months.

I just started bowling last year around this time, and my first ball was a Storm Lucid.  The past year has been full of trials and tribulations, lots of open bowl time, and plenty of help videos.

I think I have progressed decently, and recently joined my fathers bowling team.  After two quarters, I have a 171 average and a 239 high game.  I don't throw very fast, around 12 mph, and I have average at best rotation on the ball.

I have been looking for a new ball to help cope with heavy oil conditions.  The Lucid I have does ok, but I have to play too far inside with heavy oil and end up leaving a lot of 10 pins.  It is drilled with the pin slightly below and to the right of the ring finger.  I tried a Byte and loved it, that had the pin slightly above the ring finger.  I thought maybe polishing my Lucid could mimic the great back-end the Byte had, but now I just have a ball that has even less movement.

I want to stay in the Storm/Rotogrip line up since they use our software to design balls.  (Silly, but we all have our moments)  I originally thought the Marvel-S was the way to go, but now have started looking at the Hyper Cell.  I am just looking for some input.  Sorry for the book, and if I can provide any other info to help out let me know.

Thanks

Getting ready to buy, no thoughts on Marvel-S vs Hypercell?

I also saw the new Mastermind Genius from Brunswick, would it be any stronger than my Lucid?

Hyper cell is very strong and needs lots and lots of oil. My question is if the byte is doing better than the lucid are you sure you are seeing heavy oil?

So you have a pin down, low rg, dull surface ball that you have to play too far left with, and a pin up, mid to high rg, polished surface ball that you really liked.

With your experience and 12 mph ball speed, save your money instead of buying the high end stuff. In the Storm/Roto line, you can find the Wrecker for less than $100 before drilling. From your description, it sounds like it would be perfect.

I am basing lane condition definition on others in the league, and the fact many have issues getting the ball to react.

I see the RG on the Lucid is 2.52, and the Byte is 2.55.  Is that really the difference between whats considered a low rg versus mid to high rg?

Can the difference I see between the Lucid and Byte (and its back-end movement) be attributed to the difference in pin location?

Thanks for the input, I do appreciate it!

You said that you've been bowling for almost a year now.  Has your Lucid ever been cleaned, de-oiled, or resurfaced in any way?

De-oiled about three months ago.  I use a cleaner on it after every session, and every 10-15 games I hit it with a 3000 or 4000 abralon pad.
