Marvel Pearl VS VR Pearl
« on: September 30, 2011, 11:29:01 PM »
Im thinking of getting one of these 2 in the next month or so. Has anyone thrown both? How do they compare. I know that another sites scale has the Marvel considerably stronger but I was curious about peoples experiences. Thanks.

I dont think they will be alot different, etc. I do think the Marvel will naturally be a little earlier than the VR. The VR is one of the cleanest balls I have thrown lately with such a strong move off the spot.

Overall there may not be a need for both balls in the bag unless drilled differently... Im a pretty big fan of the VR so the Marvel is gonna have to do alot to impress me. John

I threw both of these on a 40' challenge shot while attending Storm U a few weeks ago. With identical drills the VR Pearl went longer before it made it's move. The MP was earlier and stronger overall, I thought it was a more rolly ball compared to the VR Pearl. For me the MP allowed me to open up the lane more.

Reaction wise the VR Pearl reminded me of a smoother Reign that didn't squirt on the oil. MP is more like a Agent, Gravity Shift combination - which a lot of other people have said and I agree. Overall I would say the MP is stronger and some of that is probably because it does roll earlier than the VR Pearl but it also has a stronger coverstock on it. Depending on the bowler but I'd say the MP is 3-5 boards stronger overall.

I don't think you could go wrong with either ball on a THS. I'd choose based on the reaction shape you want. If you want longer and a strong backend go VR Pearl. If you still want strong but earlier roll and more control go with the MP. If your THS does have a lot of friction I do think the VR Peral would probably be better due to the extra length it gets. If you bowl tournaments or sport shots I think the MP would be more versatile. I got a MP drilled up after returning from Storm U and it's been my workhorse ball this season. I feel confident throwing it on med-light to med-heavy conditions, THS or sport shots.

John, I think if you give the Marvel Pearl a chance, it could certainly impress you. Ever since I won mine from Storm's Twitter contest, I've ended up throwing it for probably 75% of the games I've bowled in league on both fresh oil on synthetic lanes and a second-shift condition on wood lanes. It's an incredibly versatile ball because it's strong enough to handle some oil, but it also doesn't burn up all its energy early on. It gives me the kind of motion I like to see, where it picks up in the midlane and begins to hook, but doesn't snap left and straighten out immediately. Just a nice, predictable motion that still creates unreal pin action. (I had the front 10 with it Saturday night in fact with a ringing 10 on the 11th shot. Oops!) A lot of balls can get reactions similar to this, but none I've thrown do it quite as well. A fantastic go-to ball that can handle a little bit of everything except an outright flood or a bone-dry desert.
