My Special Agent has no midlane!
« on: April 21, 2007, 09:33:48 AM »
I bought the special agent thinking it might be a similar but stronger version of the Super Charge. I've read about the great midlane and continuation but man, mine goes 50 feet and then has a hockey stick reaction into the pocket. It's drilled with the pin under and slightly to the right of my ring finger-4 1/4 from my pap-with the cg kicked out about 45 degrees with an axis hole 1 inch below my val.

It is great in medium heavy oil but leaves a lot of weak 10's if it doesn't come off the dry and/or finish flush in the pocket.

I shot 268 with it in league out of the box and then it was all down hill from there. The next league session I went 235 then left several weak 10 pins, switched to a Hammer Pain and salvaged the night (now there's a ball that finishes hard).

So, despite the hockey stick reaction the SA is performing well on fresh oil, but after that it's over/under and weak.

I'm thinking we kicked the cg out too far and should have placed the axis hole lower relative to the thumb. Any other ideas?

Check the side weight, with this layout you need to be close to zero.

You could all so knock the cover down a bit to give the ball a little bite.

Forget about the static weights.. the surface prep of the ball is the largest influence on reaction.  The special comes at 2000 grit abralon which is quite fine.  Have it taken down to 1000 grit and try it out.  If it is still going too long for you, try a 500 grit pad.  With these adjustments, you will see a real difference in ball reaction.

All good suggestions. I thought of taking the side weight down (it's at 1/2 oz now) and can put it on the spinner and mess with the coverstock. Thanks !

What is the cg measurement to your pap? If you have the cg kicked 45 degrees, i think that is pretty far out. It will make the ball rev really early and mellow out the backend. That's why on fresh oil it's great but with carry down it is more smooth. Where is the weight hole place relative to your PAP?

Looks closer to 25 degrees than 45.

I sanded mine down to 4000 after the lane polish had gotten to it, and its a beast.

As I said before, due to a whole lot of lane use, the synthetic shined the ball up, as it was polished. Sanded "down" to 4000.

How does "synthetic" shine up a ball? Is it possible you meant "oil"?

If you did not know, the oil build-up on the synthetic lanes is very slick, more slick than the oil itself.

The "oil build up", ie the oil itself, is slicker then the oil itself.  Unless I'm crazy, you just said that the oil is slicker than itself.  This site needs more advanced smileys to express the confusion that statement creates.

Well, we all know what he's saying (after some use on oiled lanes the 2000 abralon finish, which is equivalent to matte, becomes glossy, akin to a polished cover). I still don't understand why you didn't take it back down to its oob condition? I mean 4000 abralon "polishes" up on oiled lanes as fast as anything and is just a step below a low grade polishing anyway.

I keep my No Mercy at 2000 and that's good for just a few games. It then becomes more like 4000 and eventually becomes glossy which necessitates doing the process all over again.

Wallshot- If your pin to pap is 4-1/4, then your cg to pap is way short. It's making th ball rev way early whcihmakes it great for fresh but for transition it's already burnt out by the time it hits the backend. The pin on this ball is way too long for that set up.
