Newish Bowler
« on: August 18, 2009, 05:23:09 AM »
OK so I started bowling with my own ball about 6 months ago (tropical storm). Ball is great for the dry lanes but I needed something for the oil in my upcoming league (first one for me). So I got a Virtual Energy which was reccomended by the guy at the pro shop. Ball works awesome in the oil. Once I get a little more experience (after this league is over). I will enter a few tournaments and go from there. What other balls would go good with my VE and Tropical to make a decent league/tourny line up. I would prefer to stick with Roto and Storm. I am a Stroker with ball speed between 16 and 18 mph depending on what the shot is doing. My average is 170 and climbing as I gain more confidence and practice more. (

I'll post pics of my VE and TS so you can see the drill layouts. Suggestions on those would be great too.

thanks, Paul

I'm pretty comfortable with my tropical as my spare ball. How does the Nomad pearl compare to the Mars?

Well I wouldnt even consider the Mars cause its probably to much like the Tropical. I woudnt go with the nomab pearl since you have a virtual energy. Maybe the nomab solid. That way you can have a different coverstock type. Unless you wanna go over the Energy and get something like a Virtual Gravity.

I see, I always got the impression that the Mars was a little stronger than advertised, but then again so is the tropical. Maybe a fast or furious and possibly a natural would fit between the two better? My pro shop guy will not order the Virtual Gravity due to too many customers having problems with them apparently? He also steered me away from the Brusnwick Siege.

is it that good 4PinHatesMe? I havent gotten mine yet. I was just afraid it would be to close. Not exact. I mean both being cheaper low performance lines. I was just trying to get him into a different type of makeup of a ball. Like a different surface. Thats kinda how I set mine up that way I can cover more variety of conditions. I like the idea of the furious since its a step down from the Energy but yet has a nice coverstock that nothing else he has is close to. Sorry if I was wrong 4PinHatesMe like I said I havent seen it yet and just was going of what I kinda aasumed it to be. WHats it like in the roto line?

i agree with 4pin the mars is the most unique piece i own. and it is alot stronger than advertised. i can play this ball down and in on the longer patterns and wheel the lane on the shorter ones. i think the hybrid coverstock is what makes it so unique. this ball is nothing like a tropical way stronger and way more versitile. its always the first ball out of my bag and i would say it has a place in anyones arsenal. just get this ball you will not be dissappointed.

Okay, you guys have convinced me - Nomad Solid, pin down, double thumb layout - different reaction from anything in the arsenal - and assuming there is already a spare ball another is not needed

I do like the Mars though, and it is stronger than the Tropical and a lot smoother with its hybrid coverstock which smoothes out over/under.

Would the Mars be pointless with me having a Virtual Energy then since the both have a hybrid cover? Or is it different enough that it does not over lap?

the mars would compliment the Virtual Energy nicely the VE can handle more oil than the mars. so when your VE is checking up a bit early switch to the mars and enjoy the show.

Ok I think my next ball will be a Mars or Furious. I'll see how the beggining of my league is going to decide which one.

Thanks for all the replys everyone.

Don't forget about the Hyroad...

One of the best balls ever IMO. With you having a Virtual Energy it wouldn't be a horrible idea to look at it especially with both of them having a hybrid cover. And takes cover adjustment extremely well!

All of the other suggestions were good too. Just throwing in my 2 cents

Because you're a stroker with average ball speed, you're going to need an "oiler" if you're going to be bowling in some tournaments.  The Virtual Gravity is a great ball, but if your pro has convinced you otherwise you might consider the original Cell or the Rogue Cell if you're set on Storm/Roto-Grip gear.

If you're open to other ball companies you might consider 900 Global's Bounty Hunter.

If you're averaging 170, your spare game needs work. Get a spare ball and practice with it a lot.  A spare ball won't be affected by conditions like your Tropical Storm will be.  With a spare ball you'll be able to throw the same way for the same spare every time.  Consistency is the key...if you never throw a strike but consistently pick up your spares, you should average in the 180s.

I know I need to work on spares, but mostly just need to finish fixing a few bigger flaws. My timing has been off which leads me to inconsitancy in hitting my mark. I've been working at it a lot lately and improving greatly before I start league. I guess that is true about the tropical and spare shots. I'll look into some plastics.

And no I'm not 100% set on having a Storm and Roto line but I'll wait to purchase a bigger oil ball until after league and see where I am from there as far as being ready to enter some tounrys. Right now a ball between my Virtual and Tropical is what I'll be getting and possibly a spare ball. The ABT tournaments offer a somewhat fair playing field with the handicaping and then my local allys have a few tournys a year. I'll start off with the small stuff and work my way up.

Also thanks for the Hyroad suggestion ryno.

What does everyone think of the rico drilling layout for my style, I've been thinking about giving it a shot.
