Pins (not the ones you knock down)

Just curious, does anyone know what causes the pin to sink or swell up?  Does this hurt the ball reaction or the ball in anyway?

Not sure what causes it...temperature changes would be my guess as the pin is made from a different material than the coverstock.

It shouldn't hurt anything.  If it bothers you, have your driller drill the pin out and fill it with plug.  We did that on one of my dad's.  The finger was very close to the pin, actually drill part of the pin out.  The pin started to slip, so we just drilled the rest of it out.  I know of other people where the layout caused the pin the be in the middle of the finger hole, so the pin got drilled away, doesn't affect ball reaction.  It's just a pain if you ever redrill the ball as you don't know exactly where the pin (top of the core) is.

Eh? You mean that the pin protrudes from the ball surface?

I had this case after sanding the ball for resurfacing - the pin (like plug material) appreared to be harder than the coverstock, so after sanding the surface down both pin, plugs and an urethane thumb insert protruded considerably from the ball's surface and impaired a proper roll - the ball would rumble and jump when it crossed these sections. Shaving the excess material down with a knife repaired this occurrence.

I also had the case that the pin on my Particle Blade and my Vicious Attack both started to protrude or swell after hot water baths for oil extraction - at least that's what I think caused the pins bulging outward. Again, the knife and some sand paper fixed the problem, even though the pin never was in the track area.
