reaction....Invasion vs Reign of Fire
« on: April 27, 2010, 02:55:54 PM »
I've been studying these two ball reactions off these two videos (these guys make good videos) and I'm interested in a strong ball and these two from Storm look both interesting but I can't really tell the difference in reactions. I've been reading more praise from the Reign of Fire and don't know why the Invasion has gotten such bad reviews? Someone clarify?

I've yet to throw my ROF on a shot that has enough oil. It's a monster off of the oil. I've had the best shot with my Evil Siege lately.

I think the ROF may be better suited for easier conditions and the INVASION for tough stuff.

Could it be that the INVASION is a smoother rolling ball front to back whereas the ROF has more angularity on the backend?

I used my ROF on a longer, heavier shot (one I usually struggle with)recently and found for the first time I didn't feel locked out. In addition, I was the only one on the left side and the ROF allowed me to burn a hole in the shot and shoot a solid score. I have not thrown the Invasion but I just don't see the ROF being suited just for easier conditions at least for me.

I was curious what is everyone's favorite surface on their Reign of Fire and Invasion for heavier patterns?

I actually took the ROF to 360 once on a heavy 42 foot flat pattern and the ball worked ridiculously well. Other than that I usually like the ROF at 1000, but typically depends on the amount of oil present and length.

For me, the ROF rolls harder earlier than the INVASION, which means it needs more front and middle of the lane oil. I feel like I can manipulate the INVASION more with release changes to change how it rolls.

Yeah I noticed the same thing. With the Out of box surface the Reign of Fire was fairly angular in the late mid-lane, but once I took off the box surface and put it at 1000 the ball was much more of a beast up front and in the mids than late. The place that I typically bowl is very slick, and even short sport patterns are almost unplayable unless you start playing direct at the intended breakpoint. By taking the ROF to such an extremely low surface grit it allows me to create a little bit of miss on a flat pattern until the lanes break down enough for me to jump to a much weaker piece of equipment. If they don't break down as aggressively and the ball starts to burn up I'll usually jump down to a similiarly drilled blast zone, and wait till I can make the jump to my Hy-Road.

The Invasion on the other hand creates area on pretty much any pattern with volume. It trully is an amazing piece of equipment when used properly.

It's fantastic for squaring up on heavy oil, but I agree with Riggs that on true heavy the Invasion allows me a lot more options.

I thought the ROF was OOB 1k?  Or is 1k grit polish a little different than 1k with an abralon pad?

The ROF is out of box 1000, but OOB 1000 and taking the ball to 1000 Abralon aren't the same. Maybe Riggs can tell us the process Storm uses on the ROF surface. Personally, I hit the ROF with 500 for about 2 minutes and then hit it with 1000 for 45 seconds.

It's why I always lose the factory surface when I get a new ball, because you are never going to get that same exact reaction with the ball that you get from the OOB factory finish.

The only balls that I don't touch the surface of are factory pearls, I'll usually use them at factory finish and once they start to lose their reaction I will sell them to a youth bowler.

You definitely change it by going over it with a 500 pad for 2 minutes and I assume that per sphere or side of the ball.  I don't have any factory finishes on my solids either but I usually don't take it down that much with a 500 pad.  Is the ball smoother now with your changes?

Yes at 1000 the ball is very smooth, if I need more bite the ball is great at 4000.

I'll be hopefully buying a Reign of Fire today...but if the pro shop operator can talk me into the Invasion I'll buy that.
