Ball selection question
« on: January 08, 2009, 06:40:00 PM »
Would like to get the opinion of Storm User here...
If I would like to get a 3 ball arsenal, including the spare ball, for league bowling, should I get
a) 2 virtual gravity, drilled it one pin above and one pin down
b) 1 virtual gravity drilled pin up and one gravity shift or
c) 1 virtual gravity drilled pin down and one gravity shift.
Thought of keeping my AO only for tournament.
I am a lefty with higher speed and lower rev. Thanks !

One VG pin down and one Gravity Shift.

I'm finding out more and more about the VG as I throw both of mine.
'm finding out that the VG likes to be reved up.  With good speed and med revs the carry is tremendous.  Get off my hand with lower revs, it will leave a 10 pin all night unless I get lucky.  But get some fingers in the ball and its a carry fest throwing pins low and everywhere.  The VG's surface is very tuneable as is the Gravity shift.  The second VG is just over kill even with the pin high imho.

What is the league shot like? Is it wet, medium or dry? Your profile says medium revs but your post says low, which one of those also.

If you see some oil and it doesn't break down bad I strongly reccomend a Dimension and Hy-Road, its kind of sad that the Dimension is being forgotten about because of the Virtual Gravity. Both of those two utilize the same coverstock, cores are different but for a bowler like me I'd much rather have the rollier ball and that is the Dimension. Also the Hy-Road is a perfect step down for me, when my Dimension starts checking up earlier or rolling out and I just can't find more oil or enough room for it I'll pull out my Hy-Road. The Hy-Road is much cleaner through the heads, a little stronger downlane but overall a good amount weaker than the Dimension.

Now if you don't see as much oil a great option that wasn't mentioned in the T-Road Solid and T-Road Pearl, both balls are fantastic and often slept on.

Thanks Nicanor for your recommendation, sound good to me.

Mr Straight Ball, sorry to mis-lead you what I am trying to say is I am more speed dominant. Lane condition should be medium heavy at least.

Hi Magicmike, I do own a Dimension previously but traded it with my buddy, I agreed with you that it is a very good ball but as of now I would like to try the Virtual Gravity.

Storm38,

If you are planning on drilling 3 new balls, one being for spares, and the other looks like a Virtual Gravity, I would recommend drilling a symmetrical ball for your third selection (a Thunder series ball, or a Fire line ball). If you are only using two "strike" balls, it is a very good idea to have at least one that is symmetrical in core shape. The Gravity compared to the Virtual are designed for two different volumes of oil, however the over all ball motion will be similar in shape on those two different conditions, and if that isn't the shape you need to carry, it will be a long night. However, giving yourself a different roll through the lane with two different core shapes, will give you more options to play the lanes differently.

I would recommend a four ball roller bag and four ball arsenal.  I think a spare ball like the Storm Ice or the blue dot as part of your arsenal can be very helpful.

Again today I worked with the VG and even more so I say if you're rev challenged carrying the corner pin can be a challenge.

I did not match up with the T-Road solid or pearl and I am working with the HyRoad now with better luck but it would have to be either the Gravity or the Hyroad and maybe a Rapid Fire pearl.

The VG coverstock is extremely versatile and also needs a lot of upkeep, but has not died out like some of the other companies oilers.

I also like the weightblock in the VG better then the Dimension.  But again thats just an opinion.

Staying with the VG in a medium condition league with four bowlers per team and a three game set would lead me to believe that you need to have a set down ball that you feel very comfortable changing to.

Good luck,

Very true -- I have the exact opposite opinion.  I love love love my Dimension, and didn't particularly care for the Virtual Gravity I tried once.

Dan,

I didn't match up with the Gravity Shift or the T-Road solid.  Great bowling balls.  I didn't see the back end in the Dimension like I see in the VG.  Like most say, the Dimension was rollier.

I can almost compare the VG to the Lane 1 Agent Orange as being close in lane path, oil pattern and the ability for surface change.

You suggest a: rapid fire, street rod pearl, and ice storm. How would do you think the rapid fire pearl would fit in to replace the street rod pearl in?
