Storm Crux - Greatest Storm ball since the original X Factor
« on: December 07, 2014, 07:08:38 PM »
Let me start by saying I'm by no mean a Storm fanboy or get hyped on buying a new ball from reading online reviews from companies staffers.   I bowled with Lane1, Big B, 900G (loved the Black Eagle).  I decided to purchase a Crux after reading the about the extensive R&D that went into the development of the ball.  My biggest concern was how long can I keep the ball in play after reading about the ball needing heavy oil to be effective.  Our league bowl on heavy-med and it seem like the THS pattern breaks down really fast.  Got my Crux drilled with a 4 x 4 x 2 layout.  I'm just the typical down and in bowler (target 2nd arrow) avg speed around 15 -16 mph.  Due to work commitments during the week I just had enough time to roll 3 practice games with it before our Friday night league.  The one thing I noticed right away in practice was how well the ball carry.  The sound on pocket hits were like the ending of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture with full Cannons.  I'm normally leery about using a new ball in league with limited practice time but I was so impressed with the Crux in practice that I decided to roll with it on Friday. The ball did not disappoint during league play.  I ended up with a 227, 203, 244 (for a 674 series) I kept the Crux in play all 3 games and carry was simply amazing.  I think Storm definitely did their homework with this ball and its no hype. The Crux I think will go down as one of their greatest ball right along with the original X Factor.

Comparing the layout on the old X Factor and the new Crux I would say yes they are drilled the same.  No.. to trying the Crux out on PB & J pattern.  That video is hilarious though  ;D

Good to see some feedback on this one. Seems a little quiet for hi end Storm release to not get a little more "talk".

Something that I noticed about the Crux both from throwing it and watching several go down the lane at a high school tournament yesterday, is the look is not overkill. Good strong arc but not hard charging, in your face back end. I was going to drill mine with a tame layout and got talked into a little stronger pin placement. My friend had seen it go down lane more than me at the time and said he felt the ball was smoother than being played out by Storm. I am glad I didn't drill it too weak because then I would have to probably put a more aggressive surface on it and that would have made it more limited for me to throw around here in league on the medium length patterns in use at the centers that I frequent the most.

I did get to throw it on a 45 flatter sport pattern a few days ago. Good read of the lanes with the box layout and 3000 surface. It was holding energy better than the IQ Nano that I was also using which has the stronger NRG cover on it. I think for today's lane patterns and oils, ERG is about the strongest cover Storm can use on a ball and not have it become too conditional.

Any one have some thoughts on this one?

Mike,

I definitely agreed with you on the look of the Crux. The arc is control and the impact on pocket is like "WOW".  The only opened frame I left Friday was a weird 8-10 split on what I thought a nice pocket hit.  The last high end ball I attempted from Storm was the Byte (I was not impressed.  Did not even put it into league play) but the Crux is so far so darn GOOD.  I bowled 4 practice games today on Red Pins Sunday and won 14 free games.  Struck on every red pins given and ended up with a 948 4 games series  .  The movement and impact of the ball on the pocket is something I have not seen in a long while.  I'm gonna write a letter to Santa asking for another Crux this Christmas  :P

I have only bought 2 Storm balls a Crossroad and a Depth Charge. I did'nt like the Crossroad, the Depth Charge I had for a few seasons. I never seem to have a good reaction with Storm. Roto on the other hand has been the only balls in my bag for the past 4 years, and yes I know they are made by Storm, but just roll better for me. A friend of mine just got a Crux to try it, he also  does not usually match up with Storm. He absolutley loves it and also said it the best hitting ball that he has had. So with that being said, I will be getting a Crux very soon!
