the reign...
« on: July 01, 2009, 01:20:16 AM »
while i am looking forward to seeing what this ball can do, i wonder why storm is being so secretive about this particular ball. no information, no specs, no pic of the core, nothing. it kinda irritates me really. i mean is it really gonna be that great? all i know is that for all that buzz they are creating by not realeasing anything about it, it BETTER be a great ball. its probably all just marketing, to try to generate sales, so i'll do like i always do, wait untill i actually see the ball in action and read reviews to gauge where it will fit im my lineup. what do you guys think?

Buddie's Pro Shop calls it "Cam" weight block. Yeah, I'm interested too. Especially since it's 1500 grit polished R2S pearl reactive. Might be a step down from my original Shift.

Specs put it perfectly in between a T-Road Pearl and a Rapid Fire Pearl.  The core looks very different than anything else in Storm's line though...

The numbers also seem to support that it's another 2 piece, or thick shelled ball.

You can see the weight block and specs by looking at the 2009 product catalog on the Storm website.

Thank you for that link.  That's an awesome looking ball.  I think this is my next Storm ball.  Looks like it will be the perfect compliment to my Attitude & Shift.

I'd also be interested in a solid coverstock version of this ball...  What would it be called? Monarch or Ruler...... Hmmmmm

Good stuff, thanks for posting the catalog. As can now be seen the C.A.M.(Storm) and CAM (RotoGrip) cores are entirely different. The C.A.M in the Reign looks like a logical progression from the center heavy, flip block enhanced Thunder Core combined with the trend towards higher volume cores.

I look forward to seeing this ball in action

thats what i was thinking dave, the core is taller than recent releases, but wide at the top. taller cores are something i think they've needed for a while. im thinking massive backend continuation i cant wait to see it in action.

It is nice to end the speculation that the Roto and Storm varieties of the CAM core are the same, but I don't see all that much difference between this core and the Thunder core.  There are differences in the shapes of the cores, but the designs share many of the same formal features.  They both are symmetrical, have high density pucks/spheres at the center of the cores, and have a flip cap at the base of the core.  Moreover, the statistics are very similar:
15lbs Reign    2.57rg    .048diff     R2S Pearl Reactive    1500 polished finish
15lbs T-Road Pearl    2.57rg    .046diff    R2S Pearl Reactive    1500 polished finish

I know that we're going to have to see the Reign on the lanes to make a real judgement about its similarity/dissimilarity to the T-Road Pearl (and to very similar Rapid Fire Pearl as well).  I personally may be in the market for the Reign regardless of similarities to the T-Road Pearl/Rapid Fire Pearl as I missed both of these great releases in the past.  I just bring these issues up given problems in the past with other companies (notably Brunswick in my opinion) that ride their success with very similar releases (see Strike Zone<->Red Zone and Nemesis<->Wizard) only to eventually fall behind the curve.

Thanks for posting the catalog. Two things struck me while looking through it.

1- The "Reign" sounds like a name that should be in RG's Crown line

2- The Natural's reaction chart appears to make it stronger than the Tropicals. That is surprising to me and not what I expected or wanted from their Urethane release. I'd love for someone to do a side by side video of the two balls to see if that is really the case.

I don't know if stronger is a word I would use on the Natural and the Tropicals but the Natural's higher tech core will definitely make it smoother, as seen in posted videos

In regards to #2 urethane will grab the lane early. They aren't necessarily weak per say, they even the lane out but don't expect no movement. My Liberator outhooks my Mars and Tropical on a lot of patterns. People tend to misinterpret what Urethane really does and how it really compares to Reactive Resin, it would take one awfully weak blend of urethane that was polished to be guarantee it being weaker than the entry level reactives.

With that said it is hard to go by what the charts say, they aren't always the most accurate.
