Virtual Gravity-Why so popular?
« on: April 07, 2009, 12:12:38 AM »
I am seeing multiple VG on every ball rack in my area (a bit west of Philly). What I have noticed is that people aren't scoring well with them. I don't understand the popularity of this ball. This isn't a bash. I haven't thrown a VG and I don't intend to as I have no need of such a strong ball. Is the VG scoring well in your area? I haven't seen so many of the same ball since the ONE. That I understood as I saw MANY honor scores shot with it.

Simple answer:  it's a hook monster.  And you know tons of league bowlers see someone hooking the whole lane with a ball, then go into the pro shop and say "I need this ball that's hooking the whole lane!"  Most league bowlers incorrectly assume the stronger the ball is, the better it will hit the pins on any oil pattern, etc.

(And I've thrown the VG once in a Storm Open House, and discovered it wasn't a good matchup for me, too freaking strong for most conditions!!)

I can only answer from my perspective, but most heavier oil balls that I have had started to leave flat 10's as I had to move left to chase the oil.  This one doesn't and the carry I have had with it is above average.  Furthermore, with the weaker drill I have on it (pin above fingers, mass bias at about 60 degrees, no balance hole needed), it still plays fairly straight up the lane and covers fewer boards than I thought it would.

Well, if they all perform anything like my roommate's I can see why everyone has one.  He can throw it pretty much anywhere on the lane, and still strike.

Don't get me wrong, it has a lot to do with the lane condition, but seriously, I don't know if I have ever seen a ball be as forgiving as this one.

It hooks a lot, so he has to stand left, throw right, and basically the ball does the rest of the work.  It's a pretty sick sight.

its EXACTLY what 95% of what bowlers want.......good length with "real" BIG backends.....around here I think everyone who has one loves it and those who don't have one....want one. Only problem is people fall too much in love with VG and don't ever want to put it down, even when its time to.

I think you've gotten your question answered - it is a hook monster and many league bowlers want that.  If having a heavy oil hook monster for league is really the right decision is another thing.  I have also seen a bunch of VGs at league (I own one but I don't use it during league) and in general it is not yielding the results people expect.

The VG requires real angle in order to carry - and in general it needs some hand too.  On a fresh house shot a typical stroker or tweener (like me) can't play the line needed - thus lots of flat tens.

For me the VG is useful when I can play in, and for me that is only on flatter patterns.  On Shark it shines for me since it is stable in the mids and still turns the corner playing in as compared to other solids.  I also like the VG on slightly broken down Scorpion when my Dimension doesn't give me the angle needed.

I've seen a good handful of Virtuals, and they have the same one quality that makes the Gravity Shift and Dimension so so so goood - a coverstock that DOES NOT over-react to dry.  I have never ever had over/under reaction with my G. S hift and Dimension, and I've seen the same in the Virtuals in league.  If I didn't have the most trusty ball ever in my Paradigm Passion, I'd pick one up.  But...I'll stick to peppermint

funny, they are everywhere in the Detroit area and people are doing very well with them. I tried a buds VG and it's got some moves and trips out alot of off pocket hits as well.

"When to Use: Use on any medium to heavier pattern, as long as you adjust the surface accordingly. This R2X cover handled oil surprisingly well, even with higher grit polishes, providing the under grit was at 2000 or lower. One astonishing finding during testing: the ball’s ability to match up well from any part of the lane, given some head and midlane oil. The Virtual’s ball path motion is more of a strong arc with great continuation, even through patterns with lots of carrydown."

its popular because it has the orange in it and people by it up because it looks cool. Around me everyone has one but nothing spectacular...is it a good ball, eh i cannot say it seems to be hit or miss, but nothing special...my s75 makes the virtual look like a typical weaker ball

im a low-rev player and i bought it for sport shots. i drilled it pin under to try and smooth it out. i might be the only youth bowler around here that would do that to a ball but whatever. i love it although most of the time i use my av solid due to me liking to play straighter. i chose my av solid over it on the old chameleon and new cheetah. just matched up better i thought. its a winner on shark and scorpion though for me.

Im so glad people are brainwashed to think that TRACK sucks. And its even funnier when im carrying with my TRACK ball and they're going flat ten with their OTHER BRANDS ball.

It's a lot of ball, and people like power. One guy I saw throwing one likes it so much that he tries to convert the 10 pin w/ it. Never picked it up once, but I guess he didn't ever want to put it down.

This ball has been out since...mid-November? In its 1st 5 months, I've seen more Virtuals than I did Cells in the same time after intro.
