When a Paradigm cracks, it CRACKS...
« on: October 24, 2009, 06:07:03 PM »
A couple of years ago I bought a couple of Jeff Carter's old PBA-used stuff and one of the balls I got was a Paradigm. It was a great ball for me during the time I had it but I hadn't used it in a few months. It had been sitting on a ball rack in my house in a climate-controlled area.

So I'm moving it the other night back to another rack in another room and along the way, I have to stop in our kitchen. I balanced the ball on the thumbhole on the kitchen counter while I turned around to pick up something I dropped and when I turned back, the ball had cracked not once, but three times -- huge cracks, all of them going all the way around the ball. It looked like the lines on a basketball.

All the cracks apparently emanated from the ring finger hole. One divided the ball in half along the centerline, the other went around the top of the ball like a halo, leaving the ring finger going to the right and coming back around to the middle finger hole on the left. The third one started in the ring and went diagonally back around to the thumbhole. The cracks were so vicious that it deformed the two finger inserts.

I never heard it crack. I've heard people say they hear a "pop" if they're near one when they crack but this one went silently. I gave it a brief moment of silence before pitching it in the can.

Great ball, and I got a lot of use out of it for the price, so I'm not upset. But D*MN this thing nearly exploded in my kitchen...

I had something similar happen to a Roto Grip RS-1.  I've destroyed some bowling balls in my day and usually it takes ALOT to bifurcate a ball completely but once this ball cracked within a week (although it was a week in my car...in negative temperatures all week) the thing was in two right down the middle.

My RSP cracked similarly to what you mentioned. Man... with these new plastic/urethane formulations....if you don't keep a ball in a regular use rotation....you are screwed.

I know what you mean... I recently ran across a 15# Surefire that had cracked 3/4 of the way around the ball starting at the pin I think.  Unusual to see an undrilled 2-piece ball do that in my opinion.

I appreciate the offer, but I've got too much stuff as it is. I'm giving a bunch of stuff away this week to juniors/beginners (hence, why I was moving this ball).

I've lost two other balls to cracking. One was an AMF Velocity and the other an Ebonite Ice. Both of them had one crack going around the ball once, but the ball retained its shape.

This one wouldn't roll straight after cracking. There was a watermelon slice-shaped piece of the ball that was between two of the cracks and it flowered out somewhat (which is what deformed the inserts).

I kinda wish this had happened at the lanes so I could have seen the carnage after it hit the pins.

Was the core split apart? That would have been neat to save as a..."decoration".

I tried but I couldn't get it to separate easily. I figured I'd have to work at it too much with some tools and I just wasn't up to putting in that much effort.

the only balls i ever had seen crack was new balls. never seen a used ball crack. we have had several in out shop but only near the spot light. there is almost 4 feet to the spot. but that is where the balls in out shop crack
