After my first week of PBA experience.....
« on: May 29, 2007, 10:08:00 AM »
which was a friggin' embarrassment how poorly I bowled.  It felt good coming off my hand, but it just didn't happen for me.  It was like I never bowled before.  So I got to thinking.  What IF my surfaces just aren't strong enough?  Well, since we are on the Chameleon again next week, I'm going to try something.

1)Bringing the Contender, Champ, and Phenom(recently resurfaced) out of retirement.

2) Now that I have a 9-ball arsenal, I will split 4 for THS only, and 4 for PBA patterns only, with the Silencer as the spare ball.

3) THS setup-keep EQ at 4000 polish.  Dull the Phoenix from 2000 to 1000. Sheen to Contender from dull 500 to 2000.  Keep the Phenom at 4000(no polish)

4) PBA setup-Severely dull the PM from 4000 polish to 500.  Dull TNV from 2000 to 1000. Shine up MM from 1000 to 2000. Shine up Contender from 500 to 1000.

The biggest fear I have is altering my PM, as I've averaged 230+ on a THS in league the past 8 weeks.  But it's a choice I'm willing to make.  I will post what happens...

lol, actually I'm a righty, but I know what you're saying.  And no, I don't do that.  This past monday, I tried anything from the 3 board to the 30 board.  I tried different releases, speeds, and tried to keep the line as tight as possible.  Every single time, it was just a very weak hit.

I've dedicated alot of time in studying the patterns and how I should approach them in the past few months.  I'm not saying that I came in there expecting 250's  on my first time on this pattern, but I definitely did not expect a 394 series either lol.

From an accuracy standpoint, my spare accuracy that night was completely out to lunch.  So I know no amount of surface will fix accuracy imo, and I will definitely work on that.

But I will definitely keep in mind what you have said.  After these changes.  I will attack this pattern again-with an open mind.

I am not so sure I would change the surface of the Power to 500 and take the Mean Machine to 2000. I would take the Mean Machine to 500(the layout you have on that justifies it more). The Power Machine was a very good ball for me on the PBA patterns with its OOB finish.

Just make sure that you line yourself up correctly. Do not try to play extreme angles....the further you throw the ball right(away from the pocket) the more likely it is going to not recover. Try playing a tighter line, straighter line, with a weaker ball.

You are taking very good steps in trying to be successful on those types of patterns. Surface does mean alot. Go to bowl.com and watch where the pros generally play the patterns, that will give you a starting place and watch your ball reaction from there.

Goodluck,
Carl

Hang in there buddy..

It's all about learning from your mistakes and looking for ways to do better the next time around. A lot of people do not realize that what works on the THS will not work on the PBA patterns. Keep tweaking, but as Carl says do not be too radical with what you do linewise. I had a Contender drilled simular to yours. I hit mine on the spinner with a green Scotch brite pad (500) and Clean and Dull. That ball may give you some power to the hole.

It takes some stones to post how you've done when you've not done well. I admire that. Some will try to critique. Most of us will offer help.

You'll be OK

Thanks.  I don't really mind posting my horrible outings, as I know that not only are nights like that gonna happen, but it's only temporary(I hope).

Carl, trust me, I really do not want to alter the ball that has brought me so much success over the past few weeks.  But while in the learning phase, I'll try anything.  Worse comes to worse, I can just switch right back.  if it wasn't for the new line coming in a couple of months, I'd just buy a 2nd Power Machine.

We'll just see what happens.

I did the same thing, over anticipated and thought it would be an easy pattern.

I had the correct line all night, didn't burn up or anything, I missed too many spares is all.
