Animal Coverstock
« on: April 07, 2006, 08:45:30 AM »
My wife's track animal had the surface sanded down from a different shop guy than ours.  What could I use to get this coverstock back to OOB?  Or even fairly close. Thanks for all the help.

The Animal had a compound finish on it, so most rubbing compounds should get you close.  Clean-n-Sheen would be a good place to start, I think that's a compound polish.  Storm Step 1 and Brunswick's Rough Buff should work pretty well, too.  Some compound polishes finish to a higher grit level than others (Step 1 finishes to 800 grit, Step 2 to 1500), so if you want a heavy-oil ball when you're done, stick with the lower-grit polishes like Step 1.

Ok dude first take your animal to about 400 then hit it light with clean n sheen. Dont use brunswick ruff buff. I took a ball to 80 girt and hit it with it really light with it and it super skided. Take the animal to 400 (burgandy scotch brite) then hit it with a light coat of clean n sheen. When i say light use about the amount to about the side of a nickle per side. That should be Really close if not OOB.

Ok, so let me get this perfect....

Have my pro shop put the ball on the spinner and take it to 400 grit.  How long should it be on the spinner to get it to 400 grit?  then hit it with a light coat of clean n sheen.  Or should this all be done by hand?

Spinner, for sure.  Your pro shop guy should know how to take the ball to 400 grit.  The longer he goes with the sandpaper, the more worn it will get and you'll end up with slightly higher than 400 grit.  But the sandpaper will be 400-grit (probably, unless he starts lower as part of the resurfacing) anyway, so it's not really a "how long to get to 400-grit" thing.

According to a reply I got to an email that I sent Track about the same time that the Animal came out their compound finished balls and polished balls start out at 1000 grit/gray scotchbrite.
I think that 400 grit as stated above is too rough a base to return it to OOB.

Hey ochs,

Storm Track is correct.  However, if this skids too long for your wife's needs, simply sand it down to about 500-600 for the true heavier conditions.  I actually kept mine at 400 for the floods I was encountering at the time.  Still one of the best balls I've seen to date that is very receptive to whatever cover you put on it.  Hope this helps....

If you take it to 400 you still have to hit it with a light coat of clean n sheen to get it back to box. If you leave it at 400 that is not box at all. That is probly where the animal works best for heavy oil. Take to 400 hit with light clean n sheen. I should know i got over 2000 games on my animal and it has no track lines. I got it and kept it in great condition. I just now am starting to see it dieing out. So do the 400 then light clean n sheen. It should take it to a smoother finish close to 800-1000 and that is almost ident to box. Remember they tamed the animal down OOB so anyone can go and drill it and use it then and there. It was a big oil ball but you had to take it down to use it on oil and most people didnt do that.

They stated that they wanted to return it to OOB so I told him what the OOB surface was. I got my info straight from Track. I never said that what you suggested wouldn't work on heavy oil, I stated that is not the OOB surface.
I'm pretty sure Track themselves would know a bit more than you about the OOB surface.
Sorry, but I found your wording to be a bit on the abrasive side.

I never stated that what i said would be what to do to have it for heavy oil. I said that it gets you close to OOB. I reposted because you need to use clean n sheen to get it to box. You fist have to hit it with some surface under it. If not you will make it to low of a grit and it will not work the way the ball was ment to work OOB. I am not trying to be abrasive. I am just saying what I do to my animal and what has made it hold up for me for so long. I truly dont think anyone can go wrong with this ball. IMO this is the best particle ball ever made, and maybe the best overall ball made. I also dont want them to use ruff buff. I used it and to tell you it makes the ball skid way to long. I really dont think it takes a ball to 800 like it says. I loved brunswick factory finish but ruff buff makes the ball weaker then that did. So just so everyone one is clean use clean n sheen on the animal.
