Fang Coverstock
« on: July 27, 2003, 11:02:05 PM »
I emailed Chuck Gardner at Track today with some questions regarding the FANG coverstock on the Phenom. He called me back to explain the differences in this coverstock as opposed to the others.

First of all, the FANG coverstock on the Phenom is actually a light load particle. The main difference being that the particles are much larger than those of the WOW coverstocks. He also told me that this FANG coverstock is more adjustable than the WOW covers. This new cover will polish easier and take better to dulling. This sounds interesting!!

Due to the lighter load of particles, I am not sure how aggressive this cover will be, as I have heard and seen on the clips, it gets pretty good length. The core, as with all Morpheus cores is also tuneable, drill dependant. It can be the most angular core or it can be toned down dependant on MB placement. I found these facts very interesting. Kinda interesting how with pin/mb placement you can change the look and reaction of a ball that much!!

I hope these new larger particles hold up well.  I think Columbia's newer particle balls are larger also (no big surprise since Track uses Columbia made covers).  I thought Columbia started using smaller particles to reduce TEC death.  They went from 10 microns on TEC to 3 on TEC2 to 0.3 in the muscle coverstock.  Don't quote me on the numbers.  Now they're going bigger on the particles?  More bite in oil I can see.  Longevity?

Strider, I have the same concerns you do about the longevity. We all know Doc's elixir will help in that department, but with larger particles, how much more will it help?? Not only that, but with larger particles, this will be a VERY high maintenance ball!!

I know people believe in the death of coverstocks. Most of them point to C300 for the death.

Let me start by saying this----I had a C300 Complete Chaos, Total Chaos, Black Chaos, Rock On, Rock, Reaction Roll and a few more. None of those balls died on me and they each got up to about 250 games before I moved on just to try new equipment.

My dad has a Black Chaos with ATLEAST 700 games, maybe more. He keeps the cover clean, when the cover gets a little shiney from use and oil he simply revives it and puts the 800 grit finish back on it, a light scuff and away it goes just like new.
He also still has my old Complete and Total Chaos, GOING strong, both of them.

I have no worries in buying a Phenom, except that it will hook too much and not get used as much as it should. I will have it laid out with a slightly more tame drilling than my Super Freak.
