My bowling may have to take a back seat for a long time...
« on: June 04, 2007, 01:06:07 PM »
While making my second run on the Chameleon, things started off perfectly.  Practice was awesome, and so was opening with the first 4 strikes.  I was using my Mean Machine (2000).  I started off at 25, targeted 19, rolled to 15, 10 in the pit each time.  I step up in the 5th and as a I release, I felt and even heard my wrist pop.

I step up in the 6th, and can't even hold the ball in my hand.  On the way home, my wrist swells to at least twice its size.  Whereas it's too late to go to a hospital, I will be going first thing in the A.M. and see waht the deal is....

All I know is, this sucks.

sorry to hear that, Good luck at the emergency room.

Please follow the doctor's advice and get yourself a good orthopaedic surgeon. from previous experiences, wouldn't be surprised if you popped yourself a tendon. Go slowly!!!

Lol, yeah tell me about it.

Saw the doc today.  He took X-rays and all that good stuff.  Nothing broken, range of motion still good, just sore.  He says it's a bad sprain, wrapped me up, and told me to chill for a while.

So, I don't know what I'm going to do with my Mondays and Thursdays yet...

Hey X,

Sorry to hear this.  A few years back I took my "orginal" clear plastic Gem Tek 15lbs which had a longer span and threw it for kicks...I pulled my tendon in 8 shots...out for 6 weeks (but I "AM" old)

I highly recommend once you come back, come back slowly...lighter weight just to start and then work your way back in.  I also do not know if you use any type of wrist support or elbow support but my friends (John Forst-wrist surgery, Tony Cariello-big cranker..both National PBA in the 80's) "made" me wear the "Lou Scalia splint (actually met the man a couple of yrs ago)" when I was a kid and told me it would help me stay in the game.  They were right....

This tool ties down wrist and forearm muscles which helps keep our tendons from expanding and contracting too much which is what also causes the problem or soreness.   Bascically any type of wrist support would help along with a "tennis" elbow support band to help keep the tendons tied down.

Good luck and wish you a speedy recovery...

Thanks.  I actually have the Master wrist support, but stopped wearing it two months ago when I learned you couldn't use their products in Regionals.  The good thing that happened when I stopped wearing it, was that my hand stopped swelling.  Bad thing was, well, the effect on my wrist of course.

I feel pretty okay so far.  I called my Thursday team, and let them know they may want to have a sub on hand.

It would be best to not even try to bowl if it is still "angry". Once it is in a damaged state, you will just cause more damage. Sprains can become a long lasting problem if ignored and you do not want to risk being laid up for an extended period. Especially if one or two weeks off, with icing and rest will eliminate the irritation. Once the irritation is gone (no more pain at rest) start some easy range of motion exercises and probably look into having your grip span checked out, may need to have it shortened a bit. If the tendons and ligaments are not stretched to their limits before the stress is put on the joint the better the body is equiped to handle it.

Good Luck!
