Need Advise
« on: February 28, 2005, 02:44:54 PM »
Iam sixty-there years old, throw right handed around 15mph.I bowl on a med-heavy oil condition that is layed straight across. Most of the bowlers play straighy up the three or five board and do great, including me. By the eight or ninth fram i can't keep the ball on the right side of the head pin while the youngsters just pick up their speed and still do ok.You would think that at my age i should be able to use my brain power and figure out how to over come this problem. but i didn't what i did was to buy balls that hooked less and for the last three months watched my average drop each week.Well i finaly figured it out and went out and got a coach to teach me how to swing the ball and adjust. Now to my question, sorry it took this long, what ball do i get so i can swing it and still carry the ten pin.I have narrowed it down to these three and would appreciate your advice. the three are,the Animal, the Rule or the Gp3. Thanks for your patience and help.

alex,

For what you are looking for the best ball is probably going to be the Rule, because it will still give you good length before it makes its move. The GP2 is a very good ball to swing out and watch it just come back----however, I fear that it would roll up too soon if you miss right early. I like the GP2 more than anything else out right now, and I am sure it could handle the condition you are bowling on.
I realize I am kind of rambling-----but in whole I do not think you could go wrong with either the Rule or GP2. I would rule the Animal out because it does not have as much backend as the other two.

If you can, please try to let us know a little more about the way you throw the ball....and more about the pattern. This will help us help you better.

Hey alex,

The guys make great suggestions but I'd like to know what you're currently throwing (and how it's drilled, if possible) that starts to over hook in the 8th-9th frame before I give you my choice.

The softer balls will give you more overall room to open up the shot with while the med to med strong balls should allow you to play a little more down and in.  Therefore, the correct choice of equipment also depends on how you want to attack the shot once you see the breakdown.  If you can supply us with the info, we'd be glad to help.  Thanks....

I was using a Barbed Wire driled 4 by 3 for down and in and a Thing Returns when i stated to swing it standing on twenty throwing it across thirteen to the ten or eight board and hitting the pocket and leaving a weak ten or a seven pin eight out of ten times. The thing Lives is drilled the same as the Barbed Wire. I bowl on brunswick synthetic Anv.All i was told about the oil pattern was that it was a med/heavy and applied straight across. I hope this helps and thanks for taking the time to help me out.

Hey alex,

Thanks for the info.  Based on that, I'd go with an Angular Aggressive or Rule.  These 2 balls are just a little stronger than the TR, especially on the backend.  They should both offer enough friction to handle the oil (if the TR can) and have a better finish.  These 2 should allow you to play a similar line as mentioned, maybe just a couple of boards in.  You can even stay close to the same layout of 4x3 and utilize the stronger covers to help kick out those stubborn corners.  Hope this helps...
