One week away from my PBA experience league....
« on: May 20, 2007, 10:11:34 PM »
And I reflect on how not so well I fared in regionals.  Perhaps I didn't prepare my surfaces the correct way.  To those who have done regionals and/or PBA experience, how much surface do you have on your equipment?  As of now:

Power Machine-4000(polished)
Phoenix-4000 (polished)
Mean Machine-2000 (sheen)
Total NV-1000 (sheen)

Should I go with more surface?  I'm kinda between a rock and a hard place, as I bowl a THS league on Thursdays.  What should I do?

If this helps, I'm a cranker with a 17.5 mph ball (at pins).  With my benchmark ball(Power Machine) I start 27-29, with my target inbetween the 3-4 arrows which rolls as far out as 3-4.  Breakpoint typically at 44-46 feet.

How come your TNV is 1000 "dull"?

More surface on the lanes than 4000 polished? There is a abrasing pad by Mica its used for Aircrafts its equal to something between 8.000 and 10.000 Abralon depending on how you will sanding the ball.

Just a quick question.

Why do you ask about surface changes?

Maybe you just didn't bowl well (it happens to the best of us!)?

Hmm, without knowing style and setup of the balls, and assuming Jock is not correct (that you played well) I'd say that you might need 2 things:
a) open mind for a straight and direct path to the pocket
b) maybe a solid ball with an early roll setup and some surface

a) can be quite tough when you are used to "easy" THS with lots of dry boards wher you can spray almost anything anywhere, and will come back. On sport/flat shots, this is desastrous.

b) I think the ball most suitable for control in yourarsenal would be the Mean Machine, but still, I'd get a different type of ball as a back-up. Any ball you have is pearl, and pretty strong, probably drilled to move a lot.
As a fall-back option, I'd suggest either taking the Mean Machine to a coarser grit (1.000 or 800) to smooth out its reaction and enhance control. Or invest in a rather simple solid ball, medium strength, symmetrical core and a non-polished surface with a medium, rolly setup. I think this would be a good addition as a control piece?

i used my total nv on the shark pattern OOB and i had a 681 playing in. i have the #3 drilling early and strong with the pin next to the ring with the mb str8 down. everybody else was using some dulled equip playing up 2nd so i had some friction to bank off of lol

just remember your lane surface will dictate on how the shot plays.  my ex league is on old wiid with gaurdian heads.  the track are plays alot on all the patterns.  there just isn't any miss room outside.

I played scorpion around 8 and 10. Did ok with my razor blade. It was around 1000. I brought it down to 500-600. I should see how that goes. It does seem to me that on the Scorpion / heavier stuff, some surface early is needed.

I asked these questions because I want to go in as prepared as possible, because I know I can't do on PBA patterns what I do in league(one could only hope though. ).  I've done alot of research on the patterns as of late, and have a good idea how i'm going to attack them.  Well, with the exception of the Shark, and Scorpion due to the length, which is why I have the NV, and MM set up the way I do.  Thanks for the replies.

You say your speed is 17.5 at the pins? I just did the CATS in Reno and found my speed is 17.5-18 at 10 feet. You must have some McCune blood in you if you throw that fast...........

Well, it was 16-16.5 at the pins before.  However, I've incorporated not only a faster approach(which actually kept pain off of my knee), but also a higher backswing(which kept me from muscling the ball, and making a cleaner release)

I'd add one thing that I have noticed on most if not all PBA-type patterns:

All the oil patterns seem to react the safest, when you ball speed and release are extremely consistent. You can be slightly off in targetting, as long as the other two are steady. When your speeds vary, slow speed results in early and too much hook. Faster speed results in too much skid and too late a ball break, almost every time, without fail.

One other item. Except for occasional moments of carrydown, most times, balls with big backends seem to be a handicap, as opposed to on house shots, where they are mostly a benefit. Balls with a controlled backend seem to provide a major benefit, because the backends very often act very clean, as if they were freshly stripped.

This is specially true for your balls which are mostly asymmetric. You did not mention how they are drilled. Your previous non-success may be related to the combination of surface and drill.I'd check with Rick and Carl on the drills for PBA patterns. They, expeically for a cranker, should probably be fairly different from drills for house shots.

I have a decent amount of hand and I still always carry something at a lower grit like 500 abralon (just incase it is needed).

The key to being successful on those patterns is very simple. Be accurate. DO NOT GIVE UP THE POCKET(basically meaning do not try to play extreme angles covering alot of boards). And the most important thing is this (it is a secret, so do not tell anyone) make your spares!!!!!!!!!

Very true indeed all, and I thank you for all your input.  I noticed that I had to decrease the tilt on my hand, as it would just skid on and on whereas big tilt I had was perfect on a THS.  I thought I had to cover more boards regardless.  Was I ever wrong.  My coach has gotten me working on creating a tighter line to the pocket with having my hand more parallel to the gutter, which started confusing me about how I should hold my hand now.

The more tools you have, the better he says.  in just two sessions with him, my range of starting lines has greatly widened.  I feel comfortable shooting from  the 1 board to 39.  I think is going to be a great summer for me, in both my THS league and PBA experience.

Thanks again.
