x-out ball legal?
« on: February 15, 2006, 12:33:51 AM »
I have a friend that's a pretty good bowler that bought a ball off of ebay about a year back without realizing it was an x-out.  Does that mean the ball isn't legal? I mean what if he throws a 300 would it be thrown out?
We were talking about it last night after he bowled a 279...he may want to get a new one if so.
TIA

they are still quite legal just means that it is a blem in some way ie top weight, color, or pin position

Did they run the oil machine?  Was there any oil in it.....

bowl me over,

I have a Track Freak-A-Zoid with excess top weight, at 4 3/4 ozs. As I posted in your other thread, we took care of it by adding a large wieght hole and drilling the fingers a little deeper than normally necessary to get some weight out (and make it legal).

If a ball is an Xout or a blem due to the top weight, what would the top weight be?Would it be next to NO top weight,or a ton of it.Has anyone ever seen a blem due to a lot,or no top weight? If so what were the specs on it?

Blems might be weird top weights, below 1oz or more than 4.5oz (maybe 4oz).  Could be too-long pins, more than 5" is pretty much a blem.  On an asym ball, the CG could be too far out of line with the MB/pin.

Weird colors, every now and then something won't mix right and the top half will be blue and the bottom half green instead of swirly like most balls.  Or one whole color in a multicolored ball will be missing.  Could be that the labels are done poorly or double-engraved.

If all that's blemmed is the color or labels, you'll get a good deal on a possibly uglier-than-normal ball.  If it's weird specs, you may have drilling problems, or be very limited in how you drill it.  But not always.  With stupid-long pins, you can flip the ball over and get a more reasonable pin length.

I have a Full Throttle that was double-punched(cg mismarked). It has been one of the best balls I've ever owned and the best part was the price of 130.00 w/drilling.At the time a first quality ball would have cost me almost double.I've used the ball in sanctioned tournaments as well with no problems..

I've gotten a few that were different color...and looked much better than the standard issue.

There are severl levels of blem!

FOr example if it says Bonanza these are typically from the Columbia, Track, AMF complex.  These are early rejects.  ie wrong cover on right core.  I swear I have a Delta1 cover on an Arsenal Agrressive(just guessing on core!).  But anyway it is 1/2 and 1/2!

I also have a Columbia Hyde that is a Bonanza that is slightly different color...but very similar!

I also have seen from the same complex X-outs.  These are balls that everything is right except top weight and often a very long pin out.  These balls are later factory kickouts and often have the name of the ball on them(not bonanza).

Finally the stuff you get with the name...passed their tests.

Cheapest bonanzas.
Next cheapest X outs.
Full price passed all tests.

Good luck

One of the pro shops that I go to just got in a bunch of new Bonanzas.  We played the guessing game for about 1/2 an hour. (yes, I'm easily entertained) Some were easily recognizable and some were not. Some had weird weights and some didn't.

We found some that look like a robo rule, but without the MB marked.  The owner drilled one up for himself and shot 70X with it on a night when he was sick and hurting.  He said it performed just like his "real" robo rule.  I drilled up one for myself and I'll see how it goes. Couldn't beat the price if it works out.

He also had some EPX's that had about a 1 inch pin. Pass. But, one of my team mates shot the lights out (for her) with one last week.

I wouldn't buy one without seeing it first.

I have a Freak-a-Zoid 2nd that I bought of ebay for $70 shipped when they had 1st came out.  The ball had a 2-3 inch with about 2.1/2 oz of top weight.  It's Blemish was that the eyes where green instead of yellow.

Pin-in heavy oil balls are great. For the right price I'd take one of those EPXs.

Another reason for Bonanza labeled balls is the beginning of the first run of a new ball are labeled Bonanza as they get the line set up for the run.  Perfectly fine pins and top-weights; but the covers are not quite right, either color or a mixed coverstock formulation.
