XCEPTION and lots of 10 PINS standing.
« on: December 06, 2004, 09:56:11 AM »
Just recently got this ball and throw about 6 games on it and am getting alot of 10 pins.  Ball is 16 Pounds Pin 4 Inches and Top Weight of 4.25.  Ball is right out of the box.  Any ideas of way I'm getting so many 10 pins?

operator error. This ball has more backend than most. Depending on the layout, it is probably going longer than what you've been throwing with a more dramtic turn on the backend. This will cause you to come in behind the headpin. Move left. Not knowing what kind of 10s, or your specs doesn't help much either.

What do u mean my operator error?  Is the ball drilled with too much top weight.

no. i mean you have to move left. Also, you need to put how you throw the ball (revs, speed, etc.) and how the 10 pins are being left (flat, solid, etc.) on top of that, how the ball is drilled.

I find that very deep angles result in 10 pins.  This is because the ball may enter at too great an angle and as The great one said, the ball comes in behind the headpin.

Another factor in leaving the 10 pin is dropping the ball too early and not being able to rev it properly; the ball still hooks but it won't grip the lane as well.   I find that if I drop any ball, it doesn't recover as strong and it hits light.

Vid 1 - Rule (sorry it's blurry): great release and not dropping the ball - notice the excellent continuation through the pins.

Vid 2 - Rule : same line but poor release/off balance/dropped ball - notice the greater deflection and poor continuation; almost leaving the 10 pin.

Thanks guys.  I haven't purchased a new ball in a really long time and was concerned with the top weight being so high.  I throw the ball with medium revs, medium speed, and I'm a straight line player(2nd arrow) I told the Pro shop guy I wanted the ball drilled for length with a strong backend.

does it have a balance hole?

what are the ending (current) static balances of the ball?

If you are bowling on heavy oil, this may not have been the best choice. A Rule or Animal MAY have been better. A polished pearl reactive on heavy oil drilled for a big backend will usually not recover in time to hit full pocket (skids too far, not enough friction). Only thoose with lots of hand or those who can feed the ball to the dry early enough without over reacting will be ok on the heavy stuff. If you are not bowling on first shift/heavy oil, then I would say firm up your line you are playing ( less loop, straighter to the pocket) and go for it. See what happens. If you still do not like the reaction, try a light sanding to knock off some polish (yes, I know, its a pearl) but everyone liked the Adrenaline a few years back and it was a sanded pearl out of the box.

Any questions, please write!

Hey hotshot,

Can you please describe how heavy the oil is and where you were trying to play?  This will help in making the correct assessment of whether the ball was rolling out or rolling up too late (both can cause 10 pins), thanks.
