16lb Equipment and Airline Fees
« on: March 31, 2010, 07:30:37 PM »
Hey everyone, this will be my 2nd trip to nationals but the first I'm traveling to. I'm flying into Reno, and have the 3 ball tote rollers. However 2 of my 3 balls that I can't live without are 16lbs. I'm going to fly on Southwest and am just wondering if anybody has had any experience with them and 16 lb equipment. I'm planning on bringing 5-6 of my balls. What would be the best way to go about this? pack my 15s in the roller and use a double tote for my 16s? Just curious. Thanks for the input.

I would suggest a triple roller tote with a 2 ball tote bag w/shoe compartment. Check the triple tote and carry on the tote with shoes, just make sure that any cleaners are checked with your luggage they will not allow them on the flight unless they are checked under the plane, see you soon. Stop by and see us in the Ebonite INTL Booth

I''ve got the 3 ball hammer totes and with my 15 lb equipment, it was 49.5 lbs.  Anything over 50lbs you are paying a premium on.

I flew Southwest the past 2 years out of BWI, and they should allow you to check 2 bags up to 50 lbs each.  Also, they should allow you to carry on a double ball tote which you have to stow under your seat.  I would suggest carrying on the 16lb balls and checking the 15lb balls as long as the bag plus balls doesn't exceede 50 lbs or they charge you a $25 fee.

I fly Southwest frequently out of BWI. I use 16lb equipment. I check in a 3 ball tote. Key is to check in Curbside. 3 ball tote is 52-53 lbs. Checking in curbside and tipping the guys who work out side (that are not Southwest Employees)$10 and will send them through is cheaper than checking in at the counter and paying $25 to the Southwest employees.

Depends on the airport and the TSA agents working. They don't have a very specific rule on bowling balls, but I wasn't allowed to carry-on a two-ball tote. The person that told me no double-checked with his supervisor and told me he will occasionally let someone carry on bowling balls if they're a PBA member, but that's it. Way to be consistent, guys.

From SoutWest's website

Bowling balls may be accepted as checked or carryon baggage in an appropriate bowling bag, which has a metal frame specifically designed for transporting bowling balls. Any bowling ball that is not packed in an appropriate bowling ball bag will be conditionally accepted. Bowling balls carried onboard must be stowed underneath the seat only.

I had no problem checking my three ball Storm tournament roller, and I also had no problem checking my two ball tote.

i always fly southwest to the nationals.  I always check in a the curb side check in.  before I check my bags, when I give the guy my boarding pass I always give a ten dollar tip so he never checks my weight. Its cheaper then the $25 dollar penalty per bag for over weight . Last year my bag was destroyed and a ball was cracked Southwest would not cover either.

Just FYI
