« on: February 04, 2011, 09:37:43 AM »
Does anybody know what kind of shot or pattern they are going to use on the lanes? As this will be my first time at nationals.I would like to know what I am in for. Thanks.

sevenpin:

Look for them to post the pattern about March 1st, just before the tournament starts by a couple days.  It's never earlier than that.  Will be interesting as when we where out last year as well as quite a few others the rumor was getting thrown around  we would see USBC blue pattern this year.  I think it will end up similar to last year.  A little more hook, playable if you all work together and keep up with transitions, and cover your spares.

Your in for the bowling experience of  your life. Spares are the name of the game at the Nationals. I have seen guys who say they average 2teens in league go out and not break 1600.

Ok thanks I will keep an eye out for when they announce the pattern.
As far as spares go, I don't miss to many makable spares, so I should be ok there.

It's not as bad as people are making it out to be. You just can't be a one dimensional bowler. I played up the outside on the fresh last year with good success. You just couldn't swing out to it with much success.

As someone mentioned they will post the shot right before the tournament and it can be downloaded to the later oilers.

I hope you shoot straight at spares with a polyester ball. If you're thinking of throwing a hook at them, as many people do on a house shot, you might not be so happy doing that at Nationals. The oil pattern is really different, very close to a true sport pattern for strike shots as well as spare shots.

Well I am left handed and spares on the left side I do shoot a straight plastic ball at them, but pins on the right side I do hook into them, but I can shoot straight at them if need be.
I am versatile as I can play straight up the boards or swing the ball or play a inside shot.

I have not been to Nationals in 2 years but I doubt if the patterns have changed a lot - still basically a sport pattern. This means that you really need to shoot all spares with plastic. This doesn't mean you won't get lucky and find an area that allows playing a hook at any spare, be it left or right sides for a lefty or a righty, but the odds are against it. I have seen tons of people, good bowlers, throwing their normal house shot hooking spare ball at spares and missing tons of easy 1 and 2 pin spares. They get very frustrated.VERY quickly. Do yourself a favor and start practicing using plastic/polyester at all spares, left side and right side. It will make life at Nationals much more satisfying.

How about posting a report when you get back and tell us what you shot and was it anything like you thought it would be?
