Centaur Review
« on: November 29, 2004, 12:05:11 AM »
I posted this Centaur review yesterday.  http://www.ballreviews.com/Reviews/Reviews.asp?BallID=523&ManufacterID=13&ReviewID=21858

I've had the ball long enough to give it a fair review.  Anyone have any questions let me know.  Great ball for a THS if you are looking to play the dry.

Ordering a Violet this week...see what I think.  I believe Jason said the new higher flaring Centaur was coming out soon.

Jason any news on the new Centaur?

Scott, thanks for the review.  After reading your review, I think I will have to try mine again on the THS.  When I tried it last time, it worked fine on a broken down condition, like just before the lanes were oiled but on the THS I was struggling.  They have changed the shot for the THS and I've been working on an outside line so I will try the Centaur again.

Gary--I went back and looked at your mini reviews in this forum and see you basically found out the same things I did with the Centaur.

Player just needs to play more of the dry on a wet/dry THS.  Most of us right handers are so used to covering boards on a THS that it's foreign to play down and in with lil head belly.  On the 2 THS's that I have been using the Centaur on this year most times I am sliding 19 and rolling 7-8 at the arrows down and in to 1-3.  Most of the time a lil more up the back with a bit more ball speed.

I'd try more of that type of trajectory on most THS.  The Centaur also worked well on PBA A and another sport condition tourney.  Mainly because of it's control ability.

Let us hear how you fared after trying again.

Hello All,

I just wanted to let everyone here know that we finally received approval on the new Centaur AMB Friday.  Due to the upcoming holiday, we are going to rush the release, and these balls will start shipping on Friday.

A little info on the ball:

LOW RG      2.56"
RG Diff.    .065"
Flare Pot.  5-7"
Color       Antique Bronze (bronze with blue swirls)
Type        Reactive Pearl

This ball contains our newest core design, the Anti-Mass Bias (AMB) core.  By placing a light weight cap on the side of the ball, it creates a natural mass bias directly opposite the cap.  By doing this, you now have a mass bias location without the concern of drilling into a heavy cap.

As is the case with most polished pearls, this ball is not designed for heavy oil patterns, and can become a little skiddish on excessive carrydown.  However, due to the power of the AMB core, this ball will produce an extreme amount of torque and will handle most lane conditions.

For those of you who liked our original DC core design and wanted us to bring it back, just wait until you throw this ball.  This is the ball that you have been waiting for.

You will be able to find a much more detailed explanation of the ball and the new core design on our website within the next day or two, but in the meantime if you have any questions you can email me at vbpadvertising@aol.com.

Thanks
Jason Wonders

Thanks Jason.  Guess I will be contacting Betsy and ordering one this week.

Still would like to see a stronger solid reactive or particle with that core but I will try one of these out.

Thanks for the info. Jason.  Just ordered a Violet and would have ordered one of these if I'd known.  Will try one soon.  BTW--I loved the DC Tour.

Scott,

I havent had the chance to try the Centaur on the THS yet because I had to sit out last week but I did try it tonight on the sport league.  It was sport shot #2, a 39 ft pattern, Anvil lanes.  I have the Centaur drilled up 4x3.

Standing at 10, laydown at 3, targeting 3 but hitting 4 or 5 board, the ball made a nice continuous arc into the pins.  Very controllable and predictable, which is a key for me on the sport shots.  I was only surprised by the reaction of the ball a couple of times when it seemed to skate in some carrydown.  I will probably try it again next week depending on the pattern.

Gary,

I'm going to take mine back to 1000 matte grey pad box finish.  I've been using the Centaur 1st ball on fresh THS wet/dry in one house that is older wood w/Guardian.  It gets a bit skittish on carrydown at 1200 Storm Step #2.  I like the box finish on this condition.

Last night in the third game I went to my new Violet in box condition 1500 polished drilled in a 105 deg. layout.  Played in a bit deeper to take the wet/dry over/under out of the equation and whacked 'em pretty good.  To soon to tell on the Violet yet.

Well, except for a couple of the particle balls (Granite, Midnight Scorcher) and urethanes (Red Sorcerer, Glowing Amulet and Amulet), I usually have to take the surface down a bit or bowl quite a few games to get a track in the ball first because they seem to have a bit too much length for me out of box.  However, once I do that, some of them are quite predictable and controllable - Blue Sparkle Gryphon, Blue Warlock, Green Centaur, Scorcher NPT.  The Granite and Midnight Scorcher are also that way but on heavier oils.

I did not care for the Crimson Executioner but I never did touch the surface on it.  The Green Gargoyle was a good ball for me on a toasted condition but it was harder to control with that strong backend.

Not enough experience with some of the others to comment - Purple Ice, Warlock DC, Burgundy Gryphon, Charcoal Ex, and Violet Gargoyle.

Edited to add:
The Visionary balls do seem to react as expected when trying different drill patterns so I am not sure why you are having problems with them.  I think the Purple Ice was the only one that had problems with layouts.  And I have a very bad release, just ask Ron C.

Before mine got stolen, I had some over under issues with the Centaur.  I had it drilled for early roll and it did just that.  When the THS (wet/dry) was fresh the ball rolled well say about up the 7th board.  When it dried out though I couldn't control it very well, too much or not enough hook.  I really was looking forward to surface modifications but all of my equipment has been snatched up.....
