New Breed(s)
« on: August 11, 2009, 10:32:49 PM »
I bought the New Breed pair.  I have a problem with them.

The speed of my bowling is slightly above average.  Spin speed is probably barely average, but the contact of the ball on the lanes is not at the equator of the ball but 2" in (I'm a newbie to taking bowling seriously as you can tell at my problem explaing this, though I've bowled on and off for 30 yrs  and I'm in a league now and loving it!) so I am sure it does not take advantage of the full surface as it spins as it slides down the lane.  Problem is this:  Pearl spins but doesn't hook much at all, only slightly more than my urethane.  The solid almost dies on contact and also doesn't hook much.  How do I define much: 2 boards ... sometimes.  The specs of the balls say they travel down and offer a sharp break at the end.  Because of my throwing style, did I possibly pick a bad matchup where it is unable to 'snap' at the end. The Gladiator says it offers a more smooth consistant arc, perhaps this would be better.  I don't mind spending the $$ if I can get it to work with my (limited) abilities.

Thanks for any advise you can give!

Unhomed,

Let's see if we can help.

When you stay spin do you mean you are spinning the ball?  Not staying under it I assume.  It sounds like it's bowling technique flaw and not the equipment.  Not sure until you can explain better how you bowl and your technique.  Give us some starting points. What board do you slide on, ball trajectory, ball track and flare (where does the oil on the ball go around the ball), your stats. age, which hand, approx ball speed if you know, etc., how long bowling and average, who drilled your equipment and how it's drilled..the more info. you give the easier it is to help.

The best would be to see some video if you have the ability to do that?

Hope these pieces will help complete the puzzle.

Please forgive me for not using correct terminology.

46yrs old.  Bowling for 30 of those years, but always till now non 'performance' balls (my latest of which was a skull ball).  Average 160ish.

I do spin the  ball.  I throw Right handed.  The oil track around the ball is about 1.25" from the thumb and middle finger.  Ball drilled by pro shop at a Brunswick Zone.  Ball was 3 top wight and 3 pin placement. 15# ball.  White dot on ball approx 1" away from, and located at 2 oclock position from, my ring finger (if I were to wear a ring on my right hand).  With my previous balls I always stood slightly left of center and threw ball straight since it always went straight.  I've tried that, then moved left and threw slight rightward, and then moved right and threw straight hoping it would hook leftward. Wherever I stand it basically goes straight to wherever I throw it.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks!!

Rik

Rik,

Sounds like you are not staying under the ball and trying to make it hook rather than letting the ball roll off your fingers and letting it do the work.

I suggest you get a qualified instructor to work with you.  It will be time well spent.  Where are you located?

On edit:  BTW....you won't match up any better with a Solid Glad than you will with either of the New Breeds IMO.  Where is CG on ball in relation to pin?

Sounds like your ball driller didn't know your PAP and just drilled the balls . Even if you spin the ball they should have some hook if drilled correctly with your stats.

I would have your driller watch you bowl and check your PAP , then reference it to your pin & cg.

Lastly you might want to get some help with your release and learn to stay under/behind the ball more and let it roll off your hand and lift with your fingers.

BTW is your balls drilled fingertip or conventional ?

I am fingertip, and the Proshop guy did watch me and said he drilled it to match my 'style'.  I do not doubt that I could use help with my release and I will seek that out.  I do have the concept of letting the ball roll from the fingers and not forcing it, but some adjustment there may certainly be in order.  I'm just concerned that no ball is for averyone. Perhaps I am too much of a duffer to make it work right ... ?  I will see the Pro shop guy tomorrow night (Thurs) and have him watch me again and see what advise he can give me.  I have no videos of me, possible blackmail material .

I'm not sure what to suggest... Even if you are a spinner, the ball will hook more than what you are saying it is doing. I think most of us are a little baffled with what you are saying. It is much easier to see if there was a video of yourself bowling. To me, it seems as though you are spinning, just backwards as in the ball is spinning clockwise

I'm a little lost on your release. Have you ever tried to throw a football underhanded with a tight spiral? That release and feel is basically the same as the release of a bowling ball. I would suggest you get a football and get used to throwing it underhanded to somebody for a while for the release feel. When you get it, get your bowling ball, get out on the lane, left foot somewhere around the 20 board, and ROLL the ball somewhere between the 1st and 2nd arrow from the right gutter and see what happens! HOPEFULLY you will see some positive reaction!!
Use "IT" and BOWL UP A STORM!!

The ball does spin, counterclockwise, quite quickly.  However, the axis is not parrellel to the floor (as I assume would be best) but rather tilted up 20 degrees or so upward, so the actual area that spins on the floor is a smaller circular area of the ball.  I'll try to take a video tomorrow.  I'm going for some advise to the pro shop.  Thanks for the suggestions!

I think what he is saying is that he bowls 3/4, wants  to be full roller. That way the track would cover the entire circumference of the ball. I could very well be wrong, but from the way its written that what it sounds like to me.

Yes!  I am worried that being a 3/4 bowler is not allowing me to use the NewBreed properly and the ball is running out of lane before it's track starts gripping the surface and gives me the sharp break at the end (which is what it says it is supposed to do).

Scotts33 hit it on the head you are topping or spinning the ball, you must get under the ball to make the weight block do it's job my friend.

Raiderh20boy gave great advice to practice, the fingers must stay below the equator of the ball in order for the weight block to fully engage. Come through the ball not over or around it which is just pure spin which is really worthless for hitting power and hooking action.

Place the weight of the ball on your fingertips and practice getting the right feel, you will see results and know really quick when you revert to the spin.

There is no drilling or surface going to make topping/spinning going to hook more than a few boards, try to get behind and let it roll off your hand with forward motion. If the grip is good it will just come off and roll right up the boards and hook more than enough.

Would it be possible to take video of yourself tonight??  That way you can post it here and people will be able to see your style.  Then we will be able to reccomend what is actually happening.

^ This.  You have to have your hand tilted at almost a 45* angle in relation to the forward motion of the swing to make the football spiral correctly, and this is a great starting point to translate to your bowling release.  The other important thing is to make sure you keep the ball in front of your hand and don't "break" your wrist backwards.  (this tends to induce a spin rather than a hook if you do break your wrist backwards which will see your ball drift rather than hook to the pocket)  Again with the football, you have to keep your wrist slightly cupped to throw the underhand spiral otherwise you will wind up with the ball spinning with one of the points nearer to vertical.  I've helped many people at my center with this very advice.  About the only thing I would add is to make sure you bring your fingers quickly up to your palm as you release the ball as this will give it more lift.

Hope this helps and isn't too confusing!  Good luck.
