Pretty colors and preformance, a winner.
« on: July 07, 2004, 05:46:59 PM »
Finally drilled the centaur!! What was i waiting for??? I used this ball on an over-reacting short oiled house shot, that has made me suffer from real over under problems with almost every ball I tried on it.

Like in previous postings, this ball is really better for lower track players, and slower speeds with higher rev rates. I drilled it, 4 1/2 x3 1/2 with my Mass Bias in the strong position( the pin was beside my ring finger) This ball skids long but starts to roll, the cover is not jumpy on the dry or backends at all, and proved to be incredibley smooth.

Probably going to drill the new Purple/pinkish Gargoyle soon as it comes in. I had this ball sitting around for 6 weeks. Finally had some time off to practice and drill it up.

Oh and this is my second ball without inserts and i love the feeling. Thanks to Michael Bai for the new pitchings on my fingers and thumb.

The Centaur

1000 Matte (Gray Pad)
Hardness: 75-77
RG: Med (2.61")
Flare: Low (.015" differential)
Length (1-100): 66
Back end (1-100): 81
Hook (1-100): 67 (oil) - 81 (dry)

The slate blue Gargoyle

1500 polish
Hardness: 78-80
RG: Medium (2.59")
Flare: Low (.038" differential)
Length (1-100): 80
Back end (1-100): 40
Hook (1-100): 40 (oil) -53 (dry

The numbers are taken into account but in reality, i honestly have never had a solid ball like this slide so much. On fresh oil i was playing straight up 7 board, and from time to time could move inside to about 10 playing to about 7 and back to the pocket. this ball sits exceptionally well for shots slightly inside. and i was amazed really at how well it takes out the corners. didn't leave any on a house that is normally notorious for corner pins. I have used everything on this shot, from a green gargoyle that was laid out label, that was extremely over under, to a very polished and well used( aka old) black executioner and they all had the tendancey to burn up too fast,( reved up too quick so couldn't get down to the break point) so playing anything inside was not possible, you had to play something like 18 board(@ arrows) to 7 board and back to make sure it found enough skid in the oil but recovered enoguh because if you got it out past 5 it would roll out.

The centaur how ever, was first tested tuesday night on a broken down house shot. i started trying to swing it 15 to 5 expecting big backend and it had the tendancey to not finish very well, i squared up and played 15 to 10( @ arrows) and the ball was killing it.

last night played on a fresh house shot and like i think APK or MIA said the ball played right up 7 or 10 board. tugs inside held, and shots a bit outside recovered smoothly. NO over-under at all! not much burn out, the cover seems fairly strong, but the core is late to rev up.

I have the slate blue, and used it once or twice on a house shot and it was good for about the same type of line, but seemed to have a bit less recovery, and really skided alot for me. but got into a heavy early roll.

don't expect something for medium, you can really swing the ball with, for medium light maybe you could swing the ball a bit.

I laid this ball out stronger than i do normally. so just to give you an idea, i was throwing an ego, layed out  5x3 with my pin below my bridge and my cg right next to my thumb, and the ego would roll out and not recover because it would burn out too much.

The closest comparision i can make to this ball is maybe an Ebonite V2 dry and even that ball i think had more backend than this ball would. Or maybe even an ebonite tornado, they both have very close Rg numbers, but almost twice the flare and differential. Or actually the Pirhana Retro which i threw alot last season which i loved alot on wood. the Pirhana only had a differential of .024, but man did it have a lot of backend for a dull ball. great for light oil, and you wanted to really control the backend.

On note, i was just looking at the Scorcher, and it's really amazing how visionary can take a core and really alter it in such a way to make a ball that works for light oil and has a solid cover that was once related to a ball that was useful for nothing less than the heaviest of the heavy oils.

If i was told by them first hand they share the same basic core shape i wouldn't believe it at all.

Something strong most definately. place your MB to the right side of your thumb, and try to place your Cg in the lower quadrent of your grip, for more thumb weight. the early you get this ball to roll, the better.

4x4 or even 4 x3 seems best.

I have my Centaur at 4x2 and it plays tighter than my Blue Gryphon, probably I have to move my feet right about two/three boards.   Much less backend than the Gryphon but hits and carries well.

After reading your post and speaking with MI 2 AZ a little, I don't feel so uncomfortable with the Centaur anymore.  I will toy with it some more to decide whether or not to have it redrilled, but at least now I will expect to play outside when I use the Centaur.  Like I said before I will scuff it some to see how much that could change the reaction.  I immediatley jumped to conclusions but after hearing a few more opinions with exceptions here and there, it looks like an up the boards type ball.
