I need a 3 ball arsenal.. Time for suggestions
« on: March 29, 2010, 12:51:59 PM »
A few of you may have seem my previous posts and/or threads, But just a quick background .. Im 30  Ive been bowling since I was 5 ( off and on since I was 20 ) and have been out of the game since 2006 when I had a nail go through my hand at work which causes me alot of nerve and tendon damage, But now I 'think' Im back to near 100% usability

I just got a new Diamondback drilled a little weak ( from what Ive been told ) @ 3 3/4 Right , 3/4 down, 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 .. And Its a good out of the bag ball to check lanes and is currently my only strike ball .. Im about 16.0-16.5 ball speed , and around 320 rev.. The guy at the pro shop tole me I should look for a new polished ball to compliment the matte Diamondback.. But he told me not to get something very aggressive ( Invasion , 3.5, evil siege etc ) and Im not sure why other than the fact that with my spped and rev rate I wouldnt need it..??

I know its all about how a ball is drilled so maybe its just  his way of saying I have a good speed and get good hand on the ball and he could drill something thats cheaper, a little more aggressive..??

What do you guys think?

well mj, from what i take from your post is that you need a different look than what you have with your DB, maybe something that gets down the lane a little easier but doesn''t sacrifice backend or carry.  if you want to stay with brunswick id look at the C-System 2.5 with some polish, or maybe a rattler. if you want to look at other companies for options i would say the storm Reign, or hammer burn. put your favorite layout on any of them and then change surface as needed. hope this helps!

Thanks alot Brent! Yea he recommended  the Reign, the rattler , sharp noize, cell pearl..  The problem is I have YET to throw a game on fresh oil, so I really dont know how my DB reacts on heavier patterns yet.. The reason I didnt want to get something like a rattler, cell , reign etc  is because i didnt think it would have the potential in the back end.. I dont have the highest rev or speed but i turn hard and early, without alot of ball speed, so I think it will lose its punch in the backend ( roll out..?  ) sorry pretty new to all the terms

thanks for the compliments! but your rev rate is roughly the same as mine except you throw it a little faster and the reign is one of the biggest backend monsters ive ever seen.

ok then.. Thats what ive heard about the reign too... So WHAT makes the reign a backend monster and comparable to the 3.5 or evil siege/? I thought THOSE were hook monsters

well i dont own a 3.5, however i do own a reign and evil siege, both drilled different with different surfaces. the main difference i see that the ES is super strong and much more smooth than you would expect from a pearl. and the reign is just a skid/snap beast. i can score big with both when the lane permits me to. but i havent thrown a CS 3.5 to add to the comparison.

SO by comparison , whats the difference between a reign and a virtual energy?  I just thought if I was looking for a ball to skid/flip and handle the heavy oil I would want something higher up on the scale?

LOL funny you say that, i drilled up a virtual energy looking for skid/flip and its not that sort of ball. deff more rolly than one would expect.

so the VE might just be a "semi" pearl version of my DB that is more aggressive?  All im trying to figure out is something to compliment my DB, Which is ok for medium oil, but I would like something more aggressive and for heavier oil.. Like I said in my OP, Its not drilled that aggressive to begin with , so Im pretty sure I have quite a few options .. How about the rattler compared to the reign , both drilled to have a good backend?

I would consider a Wild Thing. Drill it up and try it out with your DB and then see if you need another ball weaker then both or maybe a polished solid to try and go in between the two.

I have a Diamond Back Pearl(overseas ball) and it is amazingly strong on the backends. Hands down stronger then any other ball I've thrown.(also not a Rattle as many seem to think by any means, much stronger) So I wonder how close the Diamond Back Solid would be if it were sanded up to 2000-4000 grit and polished.

If you liked the Wild Thing, DB combo and needed something a little weaker I would then consider a Python.

I would Recomend a Pure Swing by Columbia. Its the first non-brunswick ball I have rolled in a while. It is currently my fav. ball to start with on fresh oil and it has a nice skid/filp reaction with great pin action.
