Wow...talk about expensive
« on: September 15, 2005, 07:45:41 AM »
Last night before league, I went into my local pro shop to get the thumbhole on a ball opened up a bit. While he worked on it I nosed around the shop. Voila..a brand new Smokin Inferno...yours all drilled up for the small cost of only 252.00 without grips and slug. I know that Pro shop owners have trouble competing with online sellers, but this is just to much money. Am I alone here?

Our local shop is close to the same.  Basically any of the high end equipment in stock runs around $230.... plus grips/slug.  The only difference here is that league bowlers get a 10% discount ... LOL  Hell... the new tropical storms are even $110!

I really want to support my local houses, but they make it tough...

its funny though that they get more money out of you anyway by not buying your balls from them by charging 75 to drill it! I bet they dont make that much when they sell a ball!

He charges 60 to drill a blank ball with grips and slug. Sad that I could buy the ball offline and pay about 80 bucks less. I just can't support a shop at that price.

Pro Shop operator I used to use would charge more money for drilling a ball that you brought in than one that you bought from him. He still made his money either way. About a $20 difference. He lost alot of business.

the shop at the center that i bowl at, most the high performance stuff is 165 plus grips and slug, 10 for each. so about 190 w/ tax. not too bad. the only stuff more than that is morich stuff, which is like 170 plus grips and slug.

The smokins are going for 249 plus inserts 12-15 for thumb, 6-10 for finger, plus 8.5 sales tax.  Thats $300 bucks, changed my mind real quick.

i've bought three balls online and had them drilled fo 50 dollars with slugs all three were alot cheaper than three differnt pro shops i've been to. in my opion it is cheaper to buy the ball online (buddiesproshop.com) then take it to your local pro shop and have them drill it.

I have never bought a ball online, not unless it is discontinued or a hard to find item.  Going into your local pro shop is just a better deal for me.  I get to talk to someone that can give me the right ball for my game.  He can look at my other equipment, how its drilled, and give me something to compliment my arsenal, instead of buying a New ball that does the same thing as the one i have.  The reason pro shops charge so much for drilling is because of the internet.  Say a ball costs 200 at the pro shop.  You can get the ball for 125 online, plus shipping.  Ok, say shipping is 15.00 that is 140.  now 60 to drill puts you right at 200.  Just think you need to support local pro shops instead of the online market.. are you really saving that much on a ball?  I don't think so.

I've bought most of my new equipment at my local shop, just because when I want a new ball...I want it then. BUT, I also get a bit of a discount (10%). I know that my home house's shop charges more to drill balls that are bought somewhere else, but if they didn't, who would buy from them?

Big Willy Style

PS...Smokin Inferno runs $189+7% sales tax...and I think about $5 grips and $10 slug (I don't use that or pay for it if I did).

just a funny quote i read in an article...

kind of puts into a different perspective

I read an article somewhere that had the quote "Would you ever go to Outback Steakhouse with a steak you bought at the grocery store and ask them to cook it? Then why would you bring a blank bowling ball into a pro shop and ask him to drill it?"

Would you ask a pro shop to regrip a set of clubs you didn't buy there?
Would you ask a pro shop to string a raquet you didn't buy there?
Do you think they would say no or charge you double?
These examples are a litttle closer to apples to apples I think.
