still using simple green?
« on: November 20, 2005, 03:11:43 PM »
A few years back on this website there seemed to be a simple green craze, people just couldn't get enough of cleaning their balls with the stuff. How many of you are still using it as an everyday cleaner, and what is your "secret" cleaning formula?

Me personally, i clean my balls once a week (too lazy to do any more than that) with a mixture of 1 part simple green, 1.5 parts acetone, 1 part alcohol and 2 parts water. This and a hot water bath every 3 months has kept my ball reaction going strong on all of my balls and caused me to retire them only because they are so nicked up that I can't stand looking at them anymore. If you are not using simple green anymore, why did you switch off of it?

The unused/leftover vitamins and minerals may end up clogging the pores ... but at least you'll be able to make any ball smell like a Storm ball! LOL!  J/K!  I guess I could try it on one of my old balls that have been sitting in the basement for a few years.

As far as Simple Green goes, I still use it to clean my stuff regularly.  Simply 40% Simple Green, 50% water, 10% rubbing alcohol.  I clean my balls on a spinner, so the added heat from friction works well in extracting some oil.  I'm happy; it doesn't make shiny balls dull or dull balls shiny.

I though acetone was illegal as well ... it's under the "Not Acceptable at Any Time" header.

Acetone, in any form, is illegal.  Doesn't matter if you cut it with Simple Green, alcohol, or anything else.  Still illegal.

I've been using Simple Green on mine for a while.  I cut it with water, more than 50/50 SG, though, so it's not real dilute.  I tried cutting it with alcohol, but it made it real runny and didn't seem to clean quite as well.

if you peed on a ball would that make it illegal due to the fact that when the body breaks down fat for energy acetone goes into the urin? a dumb question added onto another dumb question but what i said is true.

well you should try it out. its the legal way to use an illegal substance. but you might have to starve yourself for 1 to 2 days to make your body turn to fat rather than carbs for energy. not practical but its always fun to think up loop holes in systems

I clean mine and my wife's balls with my personal formula. It contains Simple Green and works great. I have sold it to several guys locally and they all say it keeps the balls very clean.

I think , if you look at some other comments here, you'll see some folks trying out other types of cleaners as well. Some I really wouldn't think would be good for a ball, others might not hurt them, it's more a personal preference, I guess.

As with companies, we all have our own preference in what we use and use to clean them. Acetone is one product I would never use, not legal and I personally would never use it to clean a ball, JMO.

I'd have to say that is definitely not true, based on this:

Denatured ethyl alcohol is also on the illegal-to-use-at-an-time list, YET Storm has used it as a major ingredient in a number of their cleaners. In fact, it used to even be listed on the bottle. So if both are illegal, why weren't all Storm cleaners that used it illegal?

The idea is each cleaner has to be tested on its own. In reduced concentrations, any liquid may not have the effect that the effect that the individual liquid does by itself.

FYI THE test is to see if the liquid softens the ball when soaked in a rag and laid on a ball for 15 or 30 minutes.

I don't use Simple Green because I know it leaves a film on the ball or an surface on which it is used. I don't want that film on my bowling balls.

Still using Simple Green diluted with water. I find is does a fine job cleaning a ball, though after reading Charlest's comments, have been thinking of going back to a commercial cleaner. As someone else on these boards said, Your bowling balls are an investment, why go cheap on maintaining the coverstock.

I've got a bottle of Ebonite Powerhouse Energizer and I can't stand it.  Leaves a greasy film on the ball.  Granted, I'm using it without a spinner, but it seems like a LITTLE of that stuff on a rag leaves a LOT of greasy film.  I have to clean that stuff off afterwards.  So I stick with SG and water.  Cheap and, for me, more effective.

Indeed. It takes so little if you clean your stuff regularly and don't give the ball a btah every time. Been taking a 4 oz bottle with me and cleaning my 2-3 balls after each of 2 weekly league sessions for the past 2 months. Still have 2/3 of the bottle left. The bottle cost $6.50 originally.

So your quart of Simple Green plus water/alcohol/acetone should last your whole LIFETIME!

Charlest, the simple green bottle that i bought from sam's club has lasted me well over 3 years (along with 3 bottles of acetone and alcohol at a cost of $10).

I honestly do not care that acetone is illegal, nearly every pro shop in the country has a bottle of it around to clean off superglue. I know people who went to nationals and said every ball rep had a bottle behind the counter. Its an outdated rule and a rule that I honestly don't care to follow.

I know simple green by itself does leave a film, but when mixed with alcohol it evaporates so fast that it does not have time to leave any film. This still works just as good if not better than any cleaner on the market at a fraction of the cost.

Charlest, I don't use simple green, but I use orange clean degreaser. Any soap will probably leave a slight film, but I always wipe mine down a second time with windex which removes any film that may be on the ball. This has been working great for me.
