New Ball Help ...
« on: May 22, 2007, 01:55:55 AM »
My Girlfriend is looking to get a new ball. Right now she is throwing a Tropical Storm and she says the ball doesn't hook enough. Sometimes she hits a hair lite and leaves the bucket and other times she hits the pocket and leaves the 5/10 or the 8/10.

I asked my local pro shop which ball would suit her the best, and they said either a SmashTime, OverTime, or BigTime. Which ball should she get out of the 3 or maybe a different ball all together?

Also, she is currently throwing a 14 Lb and is thinking about dropping to a 13 Lb. Will this help or hurt her pin carry ?

I would not drop in weight if I were her. If she went to a stronger ball with a stronger surface she would get a little more drive into the pocket, which should create better carry. I like all 3 of the balls you listed, but would probably choose the OVERTIME.

IMO, this rather sounds like e release problem, not a ball's. A stronger ball (with a lower RG) can help, but the weak hits might also be caused by low speed and revs, having the ball  - any ball - roll out and hit like a wet donut. We have some female players in my club who are struggling with this, and I have hardly seen an improvement through ever more aggressive balls.

Without having seen her bowl, recommendations are hard to make, but the basic technique problem is something to consider. In that case, I'd rather seek some help form a coach, or ask from a seperate source beside the pro shop for help concerning her style.

Besides, many higher end ball under 14 lbs. weight are not avaliable at all or lack a true core - some use generic cores, sometimes you even just get a pan cake thing. Therefore, and if she feels comfortable with the weight, I'd stick with 14 lbs.

my girlfriend had the same problem.... she was throwing a 12lbs tropical storm.... she seemed like she could move up in weight so i got her a 14lbs toxic hammer..... this new ball is lots more agressive and since she is a low rev bowler it has a nice arc into the pocket playing off second arrow.... since she has gotten her new ball her average has changed from around 135 to 150ish...
