Black Widow....duh duh duh
« on: December 23, 2006, 03:08:17 PM »
Okay, so I'm sitting here looking for a new ball to purchase with my Christmas money.

I have a perfectly good NIB Black Widow sitting in my room already, so really I don't need to buy something new.

My thing is, I need a ball for a medium oil house shot.  Is this ball polishable if needed?

DO NOT POLISH THE BLACK WIDOW.

From what I have seen and from what a decent amount of people have told me.. it rolls like garbage polished, so don't do it.

I would assume the reasoning behind this is because it get's down the lane so well already, polish just ruins the roll.

So, no.. this is not a ball for medium oil normally... BUT!.. it can be drilled to be one. Putting the pin at like 5" above fingers and the HMB left of thumb would make the ball weaker... but I have yet to see a Widow drilled like so.. so I don't know what to tell you.

If I were you I'd drill it tgo what it is suppose to do.. and that's being a smooth continuous big backend ball. You should love it like this.. I have 290/799 with it so you can't go wrong!

I keep my Black Widow at nothing but Polished. The polish gives me a better look of playing deep and having a more hook type of reaction with it. I use Black Magic XL and it adds 2-3 more feet in reaction and increases the hook at breakpoint for me.

I love mine polished.

If you want something weaker than the Black Widow, get the Toxic or if something significantly weaker than the Black Widow, get the Doom.

You can polish the Widow..or

You can buy a Toxic , great on med oil..or

You could do something strange and save the money.

See what's coming out in Feb/Mar and if things do work , maybe wait for next seasons ball release.

I have talked to a few folks who polished their BW and they also hated it....

Toxic or Doom sounds like the move....

Drama aside....

The comments posted here is that people who have polished the BW have found it too squirty. Some have had better luck with polishing by bringing  it down to 1000g or lower first before polishing it.

I agree, at 4000 abralon (its out of box finish) the BW's sweet spot IS a MEDIUM condition.

As far as polishing it, throw it for a few games and it'll shine up just fine on its own.

If the Widow is not a medium oil ball, then I don't know what is.  Put your favorite drill on it, try it in OOB surface, and enjoy.  You can polish or dull anything to fit your needs.  The Widow is no exception.  I tried mine with polish but I did not like it at all.  Mine handles mediums wonderfully with the pin below the ring and the 4000 Abralon surface.

Well the Widow is good on med/hvy if you have it for backend.

I'd tend to agree with Inverted 1, Raven829, and Wallshot.

I remember people saying that the BW was not a true heavy oil ball, but more for medium to medium-heavy.  Everybody has also said that the BW is very adjustable.

You shouldn't have any problems using the BW on the shot you mentioned.

You're right, it's not a true heavy oil ball but is very good for med/hvy. I love my Strike Zone for heavy because it rolls early and ignores carry down.

I punched up my widow with the skid/flip layout and have found it motors down the lane very easily even with more surface on the ball, great ball for medium to med-lite oil.in a polished state the ball was too inconsistant.for me the widow reminds me alot of the big rig but more back end.if you want more of a controll ball check out the pain/doom,great reaction and probably the toxic also.

Yea I have thrown a Raw Hammer Doom and I quite enjoyed it.  741 out of the box actually, but I moved up to 16 pounds this year because I was just winging the heck out of the 15's.

I really want to throw the Widow, and it if is good for Medium, I don't have much to lose by trying it.

If I don't like it I can always sell it and get another Doom

Thanks for the responses.

No offense, but your friends have no idea what they're talking about.  I drilled a Black Widow last week and polished it (before I even drilled the holes, actually) and the ball rolls incredible and hits like an absolute tank. I'm sending messengers on hits that have no business being anything other than flat 10-pins.

Jeff, a lot of guys have found the polished BW squirty and inconsistant from what I understand. with your ball speed you may not find the same issue. Did you leave it at the OOB finish before polishing?
