I think something might be wrong with my Black Widow
« on: April 19, 2007, 04:23:17 AM »
When I went to go practice today, I used my BW. I noticed that there might be a problem with it. The reason why I'm saying this was because when I would throw the ball 1 shot, then I would throw it the exact same way the next shot it would do something totally different. For example, one shot I would throw it and it would go high, then the next shot I threw it the same way with the same amount of hand, and it would barely hit the head pin. This would happen every single time. Then in the third game, I tried going straight up 1st or 2nd arrow with almost no hand in the ball at all, and it held for one shot, then I tried it again with the same amount of hand and speed, and the ball almost went brooklyn. I noticed that I have had problems with it eversince I changed the grit to 2000. Could that have something to do with it? This is really making me worried and nervous because I love my BW, but i don't have any money to get the thing fixed if something is wrong with it. Is something actually wrong with it?

I'm dubious that you rolled the ball exactly the same way twice. Unless the lane oil moved that fast, there's no way what you described can physically happen. Balls only respond to two things: input from humans and friction.

I made sure that I threw it the same way. I don't know if maybe the two lanes I was bowling on were completely different, or if maybe my BW needs to be resurfaced, or if I should take it back up to 4000.

Very well could be the lanes. Many of use have seen that before. I would not change your surface until you roll more.

Yeah. I'm gonna be doing a lot of bowling this summer because my bowling alley has a deal for $75, where they give you a card, and you can bowl as many games as you want without paying anymore from the middle of May to the middle of August. So I'll have time to see if it was just the lanes that were weird.

Many times we don't throw it as consistently as we think, but that's the same exact problem I had with my Tsunami.  One shot would hook good, the next would go an extra 7', then labor in an attempt to recover.  I sanded it to 600 grit, and ran it through the dishwasher (no heat drying cycle), then refinished the ball to where I wanted it (1000 grit in my case).  The ball acted MUCH better after the thorough cleaning provided by the dishwasher.  In general, Ebonite/Hammer covers need more maintenance than most others.  I wouldn't doubt the cover is oil logged.

I gave it a bath about 2 months ago. Maybe I should give it another one. I have put a lot of games on that ball.

I find this very interesting! I have a friend who normally carries between a 203 avg, and a 210 avg in about three different houses. He is a very respected bowler. He has two differntly drill BW's. When he first got these balls,he was tearing up the house. Didn't matter which house! He was crushing the competition regularly.

About halfway thru the season, he went into a slump, and has yet to recover. He continues to use his BW's with varying results, week to week! He is extremely frustrated right now.

He came out for a practice session one day. I asked if I could throw both his pieces. He said, sure. He has one BW drilled for length, with roll, pin over the ring and cg kicked out slightly. And the other a bit stronger drilled, with the pin down and cg closer to his pap.

In throwing these balls, neither of them did what I expected them to do, based on the drilling they had. Both were over/under like crazy! The one I expected to give a smooth but strong arc just bended ever so slowly, and the other which I expected to see length and a strong backend reaction, tried to hook off the lanes! It was, to say the least........bizarre.

Maybe this is what happens when they become oil-soaked? I don't know. But Crusher, you are not the only one who is dealing with some squirrly Black Widows!

Yep, I would absolutely give the ball a bath if it's been two months.  I can't say that was the problem for you today, but better safe than sorry.  Hell, I give my BW a bath every single week, then hit it with Clean and Dull, and I only bowl 4 games a week with it!

Good luck.

Thats normal. All my balls do the same thing and I throw them all exactly the same way.
