*RED FLAG My ebay account hacked too
« on: June 16, 2006, 12:40:47 PM »
FYI
Okay this can't be a coincidence.  I have been a member of ebay for years with no security issues until today MY ACCOUNT WAS HACKED TOO. I know this stuff happens but isn't it just too much of a coincidence that just a couple of days ago another member of this forum had his ebay and yahoo hacked.  I am not trying to insult anyone or point fingers but I am seriously thinking that the info may be leaked from this sites' database

someone was able to log into my account and change my ID to "yepobrown"
Is anyone else experiencing any issues like this maybe you should check your other accounts - just a suggestion

Someone hacked my paypal acct too.  Only spent $10 though, and paypal called me to check if it was legit or not like 5 min later.  I've changed all my passwords, but I'm guessing that the security on this site is all but non-existant.  Beware what info you have listed here!

If BR members were being specifically targeted, then ALL of us with ebay accounts would have been hacked.

Attackers do not just wave a magic wand and get your data.  As you and others have said Michelle, if you're using the same password for multiple logins, that's a bad idea.  An attacker only need retrieve your password from one insecure place to get your password for everywhere.

When you log in to this site, the connection is not encrypted.  Anyone between your computer and the web server itself that can get/sniff a copy of the packets crossing the wire can grab your username and password because it is sent in plain text.  That's just one avenue of attack, and can happen with any web site that doesn't use a secured connection for identity token exchange.

To the other extreme, the server itself - or the database server which may be separate - may be compromised.  Just because a web site has many visitors doesn't mean the owner has taken the necessary precautions to lock down the server as much as possible and keep it locked down.

There are a myriad of possibilities between the two scenarios above.  Occam's razor essentiall says that all things being equal, the simplest solution is most often the correct one.  The user data is in the open.  Assume that your account password here is no longer private.

Practice safe computing.  Use good passwords and never use the same password in more than one place.  If you insist on doing so, use a common password for places where you don't care whether or not anyone steals your password and use different passwords for accounts you truly wish to protect.

I had the fake email supposedly from paypal, wanting me to click on the link (which said paypal.com plus something else) and confirm my password and account information.  The mentioned dates were screwy, so I contacted paypal security and they confirmed it was a phishing attempt to get my info.  Glsd I didn't fall for it.  Screw those losers that do this crap.  And hey, it only is common sense to use multiple passwords and user IDs for your various accounts.  Can't be too safe, right?????

Same thing happend to me Poptartking.  Had over $4100 charged
thru my Paypal acct by Adun Adewale from Nigeria.  Looks like it's
all gonna be squared away, but too many people are coming
forward w/ the exact same type frauds for this to be coincidence.

Most purchases were in England as well and included digital cameras,
laptops, cell phones, and other electronic type items.  This guy is
gonna be opening up a Circuit City franchise if he actually gets all of
that stuff.

Both my Ebay and Yahoo accounts have been taken over.  My PayPal has been ok so far.  I have a different email and passwords for each site.  No luck getting either of them back so far.  Hopefully after the weekend I can get control back and close both accounts.

wow, this just happened to me also, changed the email address and password, fortunately ebay emailed me about the change, and I was able to shut it down quickly.  The email address the SOB changed it too was jd21342@yahoo.com, so if you see that email anywhere, you know it's the same SOB.

did any of you people have the same email for more than one application/email/forum?  I think that could be part of the problem...

the email address for the recipient of one of the fraudulent transactions on my account was ussjones72@msn.com - anyone recognise this address??

the other was payment@ai-electronics.com - which i believe is a Hong Kong based electronics company.

Well I have been a member of this site for a number of years, also e bay, pay pal and BBE with no problems with any of them .

Trying to blame some one because of a name used in another scam just doesnt seem right. This has mostly been going on during this past weekend and not every one is tied to this site as much as others. Lets see what happens Monday or Tuesday. I really cant see some one that owns part of this site doing some thing like this as what has been insinuated to in other posts.

It almost seems like there is a pattern of SOME that are having problems, are the ones who have  tried to uaers from this site to go to some other sites, or they have had some kind of other  problem with this site.

Why any one would use the same ID and pass word for more then one site I  never really will figure out. Seems like some people are or may be jumping to conclusions.

Wow, I was just reading this post and the same thing happened to me about two months back with both my Ebay and Yahoo accounts.  Unfortunately, they both had the same password.  It was actually someone from Idonesia who hacked in and changed my login and password info on both sites.  They proceeded in buying GPS equipment and having it shipped to somewhere in Massachusetts.  PayPal put the stop to that when they noticed the fradulent activity happenning.  It took me about two days to regain control of my accounts and change all my passwords.  It was scary to think that someone can do so much damage in so little time.

It's wierd to that its happening to so many BR members.

I had the same thing happen with my ebay account 3 weeks ago, a screen name from Nigeria bought a ton of cell phones and electronic equipment, changed my ebay name (By the way my ebay name is not a name I use on any other site I have an account in just to avoid something like this)

Need to have a serious thought about having a police investigation
