#1 Average Killer?
« on: August 28, 2007, 10:24:15 PM »
Just curious what everyone out there thinks is the biggest average killer among not only beginners, but all the way up to "advanced" we'll call it bowlers...

my vote goes for single pin spares...

I would rather bowl on any of the PBA shots instead of lanes that haven't been cleaned in months.  That is just lazy/cheap.

Teammate’s bad scores and missing single pin spares.  Yes, I do bowl bad from time to time and I am sure my teammate gets fustrated with me.

#1 average killer.  The root of most problems and causes issues with release, accuracy....yadda yadda....and that is poor TIMING.

For me this past week, it was the 7 pin.  Oh well, everyone will be calling me a sandbagger next week, when I carry better and make my spares.

Right now i think avg killer for me is just mental game.Since i know i have the ability to shoot well but just need to my head in the game when im doing well or when im doing bad. Spares also can hurt me but I make it a priority to practice as much as possible to improve

I agree with scott33.  Bad timing causes lots of problems from lack of accuracy to not having a free armswing and muscling the ball.

missing the 5 pin

seriously, spares for me, probably single pins. I know when i started bowling for my highschool team the coach made us practice 7 and 10's, and my average went from about 170's to 190'-200.

Concentration is another thing. I found that If i worried about food, or drinks at the bowling center while bowling, I would do a lot worse then if I stayed focused throughtout the game and worried about the stuff after.

Anyone not throwing Lane 1 is losing 15-20 pins per game.

The biggest average killer for me
is not striking every frame.  If
I could just get that down, I would
have a higher average!

For me it is not practicing enough. When I practice I do not practice spares as much as I should. Therefore I go to league/tournament and have a bad game because I missed 1-2 easy spares and instead of shooting 200-220, I shoot 170-180. Over the course of a season, thats a lot of pins to be giving up. Poor timing contributes to bad shots which could lead to washouts/splits which also leave open frames up and avg's down.

I'm gonna have to go with single pin spares and not having a consistent way to make them.  Switching to throwing my spare ball at nearly every spare that doesn't include double wood has improved my consistency a lot.  Like a lot of people, I used to hook it at the left-side spares.  I made a lot of them but bowling on tougher shots like PBA leagues or tournaments or in unfamiliar houses means you can't count on making those spares like that.

One single pin spare per game can make a 10 pin difference in your average.  Drying out?  Hooking by that 4-pin?  That 190 game is now a 180.  You can't count on striking every shot, you have to be able to make your spares.  There's no good excuse for missing single pins.
