#1 Average Killer?
« on: August 28, 2007, 10:24:15 PM »
Just curious what everyone out there thinks is the biggest average killer among not only beginners, but all the way up to "advanced" we'll call it bowlers...

my vote goes for single pin spares...

Without a doubt it would be spares and lots of guys and gals just practice strikes, one of the pros said that many a pro bowler have been sent home because they couldn't pick up spares

Timing. Most bowlers don't have a clue what is going until they see the ball down the lane.

i would say that the mental game is the overall cause of holding back your average.  with a weak mental game you struggle repeating strike shots.  your confidence doesnt stay high, it can change from week to week. letting the lane play you, rather than playing the lane. self doubt and confidence issues will sink you for extended periods of time. otherwise, how can i go 2 months without missing a 7 pin then turn around and struggle to pick up half the next month? it eats at you and suddenly 7 pins are the devil that owns you.  without confidence in every shot you make, be it strike or spares, your physical game is worthless.  without confidence, your ability to repeat shots goes way down, as you feel the need to tinker with something, anything to right the ship.  and by letting the lane play you, you fail to look past the problem and therefore cant arrive at the solution. that leads to worse problems, such as splits.

Here are three I think can kill any average:
1)Poor Timing
2)Missing single pin spares
3)Mental lapses during a long season

I think it depends on your level of play - For the:
  - beginner bowler it is all physical - mechanics and timing
  - inermediate bowler it is spares and reading the lanes
  - advanced bowler it is the mental game and keeping up with lane transition

For me personally it is multipin spares and adjusting to lane transition - lately I'm doing really well with the single pin spares.

Missing easy spares.  Why do you miss easy spares?

Lack of concentration on the second/spare ball that equals the amount of concentration and focus you put on the strike ball.  I see many  many bowlers that hap hazardly shoot at spares as if its barely worth their time.  Taking yourself in and out of concentration and focus from shot to shot, is bad overall for your game.  It should become part of your pre shot routine to gather up focus and concentration, no matter what you are shooting at.

Erin, I would disagree with your assertion that taking yourself in and out of concentration is bad overall. It's only bad if you cannot refocus to the same level after you have relaxed and that's just a matter of practise.

Trying to hold the same level of concentration that you have during the delivery throughout a tournament block, you'd be exhausted by the end of it, mentally and physically.

Try throwing your spare ball (unless you throw the fist ball in the gutter)at every spare you leave for a month and see how you do.

Bowl great!

For me, definitely missing single pin spares.

Others that I encountered during the summer:
1. Bowling on a pattern where the center of the lane is bone dry and the sides are out of bounds with a ton of oil (this is due to a broken lane machine)
2. Bowling at a center where it takes them over an hour to fix the equipment/automatic scoring machines which throws off timing
3. Being moved to another lane that is radically different from the one you bowled during practice because the opposing team can't bowl on a lane that does not have the hand dryer working.

For me, it's injury - and insisting on bowling 'through it' - resulting in an average KILLING 2 seasons.

Lack of practice - especially on spares - hasn't helped either. Of course, lack of practice has been caused by pain.

Missing easy spares. That's the key to scoring. Making your spares consistently. I killed myself last night missing four easy spares. It happens. Need better concentration and hence better accuracy on the delivery.
