10 pin issues
« on: December 15, 2014, 06:48:15 AM »
Currently my 10 pin making is just horrid. I used to have a 16 lb black knight, but have switched over to a newer 15lb polar ice, due to wrist pain that the 16 lb caused. I dont want to say its just the ball, but I know I didnt have as many 10 pin issues then as I seem to now. Other than just practicing on the 10 pin, should I look at another spare ball?

I doubt it is the ball, the Polar Ice makes a great spare ball.  I would look at your approach and swing to make sure you aren't trying to muscle the ball.  I have a hard time keeping my speed down on my spares.  I tend to muscle the ball and consequently have erratic shot making.

Just stay relaxed.  You have a spare ball so there shouldn't be too much need in adjusting your release to make the 10-pin.

That's interesting.  I tend to lose accuracy when I try to keep the speed down on spare shots.

Is your strike ball 15 lb or 16 lb?

I am pretty much money on my 10 pins throwing reactive. I speed up my ball speed 2-3 mph and loft the ball more. My plastic ball cracked out around the thumb slug, so I am throwing resin at them now with no issues. My balls still hook a little, but nothing uncontrollable.

Not so much "slow down" but keep a consistent ball speed from your normal shot.  If you are throwing reactive, then having higher speed will definitely benefit you, but throwing it hard and using a spare ball doesn't seem to make as much sense.

Once consistency is established, then perhaps higher speed can be used.  I was only giving a suggestion as to why he might have issues going from 16 pounds to 15 pounds on his spare ball.

But if his strike ball is 16 pounds, then I have nothing.

All of my equipment is 15lb -- and has been for a while. To rephrase this --- I have been not as consistant  since I have switched over to the 15 lb spare ball -- maybe because the lower weight and it being a plastic  -- IMO -- tends to slide more and I dont get the roll I used to have with the 16.

If you want to try something, take the shine off the ball. Scuff it a little. If you don't like it, just polish it back up. Experiment. It's your ball, you know what you want to see.

I know many bowlers that have a plastic ball that has never seen a polish machine or even been cleaned. They like the beat up ball. It works good for them.

New plastic and similar bowlingballs like the polar ice are highly polished and skid for days. If you didn't regularly polish your old spare ball it was probably fairly rough in the track which is typical. As mentioned get some 1000grit and sand the ball for 20-30secs each side and go bowl a few games with it for strikes and spares. The lane will adjust the surfce quickly getting it back pretty close to your old ball.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

Perhaps you just need to try a few different starting positions and targets to see if one of those work better than what you are using now?  We, as bowlers, change over the years and what used to work at one time will not as well now.

That was my case.  I started to miss more and more corner pins and had to make changes in starting foot position and target to get back to a higher conversion rate.

MI 2 AZ is right...years ago I used to stand on 38 for my ten pin pick ups. then, as my game and body changed over the years I found myself moving right all the way to 30th board.
Then, I went up in ball (and body) weight this year and found myself moving left again....I am standing on 36 still using the 4th arrow spare system for the right side leaves. And once i found this spot/line, it's been easy to pick up the ten pin
Does a round object have sides? I say yes, pizza has triangles..

It can be either right or left --- but I have been doing better lately - not 100% but much better, I did scuff up the ball with a red scotch brite - this seems to help. I also have been working on a looser arm swing and just hitting my mark -- not forcing it or over throwing it.

I got a new spare ball over the summer; went from a Lane 1 XXXL to an original Columbia Blue Dot.  In the beginning I was missing left and right and couldn't make a 10 pin spare with any consistency.  I also thought about getting another XXXL, but instead just practiced my 10 pin spare and things have worked out well.  I think you just need to go practice and you will be fine.

Biggest mistakes I see guys make ( even pros ) on spare shooting is trying to throw too hard to straighten the ball out.  Throw plastic or urethane, flatten your release a bit, and trust your normal timing and arm swing.  Second biggest mistake a lot of guys make on 10's is not walking toward your target.  A lot of guys line up for cross alley, but drift away from the line and try to force the arm swing away from the body to compensate.
