300 game or 800 series???
« on: March 20, 2008, 09:27:19 PM »
So my good friend on my team shoots 300 tonight(650 series) and all night was throwing it in my face cause I haven't rolled a 300 yet. He has a 192 average, me a 210...I have (5) 700 series and an 805 this year...he's trying to say that rolling a 300 is harder than getting an 800 series. I said, how can shooting 300 be more difficult than averaging 268 for 3 games...so, what would you rather have? and which do you think is harder to accomplish???

as someone who has shot both these honor scores it is tough to do both of them. however, it is more difficult to shoot an 800 series. many people( bowlers and non bowlers alike )see the 300 game as more exciting and prestigious but it's far more difficult to bowl extremely well( and carry ) for three consecutive games.

Well, I've only bowled a 300 game. I haven't got a 800 or actually anywhere near one. With that in mind, I haven't bowled in a THS league in about a year and only bowl sport shots. I've been bowling for about 2.5 years. So, when I was bowling in a THS league I wasn't that good, now I AVG about 210-230 on practice nights for about 7-10 games. I only try throwing high series in games 2-4. Game 1 being practice. My highest so far like that is a wimpy 720, this is on a beat up house shot though with tons of carry down.

Besides split pickup, all I have left is an 800 (and a 900...*cough*).

Since I've bowled both I would say that 800 is tougher.

Case in point: 300-199-300=799. I would have traded those last two games for a couple of 250s in a heartbeat.

I saw a bowler roll a 300 game and not hit 600 series. 800 is way more an accomplishment. You can luck into a 300 game, but not an 800 series.

Well considering what happened to me this week, I want the 800.  When I shot my 300, I shot 246-300-246=792.  This past week, I shot 244-262-289=795.  I stoned a 9 pin in the 11th frame.  I would have been happy to have left that 9 pin for the 299 and been happy with an 800 but I can just seem to never get that one break I need for it.

They are both Great accomplishments.  I have 3 300s and 1 800.  My highest set with my 300 is 778.  I shot 821 without a 300 game.  289 289 and 243.  You have to put up 3 big games to shoot 800.  I would say that is a lil more challenging.  Just in my opinion.  Id rather have an 800..

800 is tougher, no doubt about it.

How many mediocre bowlers do you know that have shot 300?  I don't have enough fingers and toes to count them all around here.  How many mediocre bowlers do you know with 800's?

With a 300 you only really get nervous the last 4 or 5 frames, with an 800, you have the whole last game to get nervous AND possibly a transition to deal with (if you didn't get any in the 2nd game).

Congrats on the 805 by the way!

Earlier this year I saw a guy shoot 300 with 4 shots through the beek and 3 brooklyns.
I have never shot 300 but have shot 800 back in 2002 and I believe there were almost 3 times as many 300s shot that year according to the USBC

I would rather have an 800. It shows that you rolled well for 3 games, while a 300 is just one game. It takes luck to acheive either of these, and skill as well. Take Wednesday night I start out with the first 15 strikes, 4 pin, then the ball just jumps for a split, get 2 and then leave an 8 count on the next frame on that lane. Finish with a stone 10 in the 11th for a 222 the second game. Then go Front 7, 4-6, sheet for 266=788. I didn't read the lanes right and missed a move in the 2nd and 3rd game, no 800. if a catch a break and bust up those splits, I shoot 800, or if I was skilled enough to make better adjustments, I shoot 800...no luck, no skill.....no 800. LOL.

I have had two 800 series (808, 804). I think the 800 series is tougher than the 300 game. I mean anyone can get lucky and shoot 300. but a good bowler shoots and 800 series. It takes one game to shoot 300 but it takes three real good games to put together an 800 series.

You're good friend is having a temporary moment of insanity or a warped view of reality.  800 is way harder than 300, especially in today's game.

800 is harder to achieve.  You pretty much have to be in a "zone" for 36 shots.  300 only requires 12.

Ask me which I'd rather have, I'll take the 300.  The first question from a friend/family member who doesn't bowl is "have you ever had a 300"?  I think it impresses them more if you can say you've had a perfect game vs 3 "almosts" and an 800.

Just my opinion

If I shot 300 (never have) and had a 650 series, I would be proud of the 300 but really ashamed of the 650 series. That total would indicate that the 300 was really lucky as the other two games averaged 175.

This is one of the peculiar aspects of bowling. How we can shoot lights out one game and almost nothing the next game (or vice-versa). My cousin shot 232 the first game Thursday and followed up with a 135. Same lanes, same ball, same bowler.

Amazing, ain't it?
