300 game or 800 series???
« on: March 20, 2008, 09:27:19 PM »
So my good friend on my team shoots 300 tonight(650 series) and all night was throwing it in my face cause I haven't rolled a 300 yet. He has a 192 average, me a 210...I have (5) 700 series and an 805 this year...he's trying to say that rolling a 300 is harder than getting an 800 series. I said, how can shooting 300 be more difficult than averaging 268 for 3 games...so, what would you rather have? and which do you think is harder to accomplish???

I think the 800 is tougher.  Thats probably why I don't have one.  lol

I would like to have both.  I think the 800 is harder though.  Before this year I had only had about 10 700's in my entire bowling career(15 years).  This year I have had nearly 20 alone, with a high of 780.  I am still in search of that 1st 300.  There have been nights I have thrown the ball great, but there is always something that won't fall.  Right now, as a personal goal of mine, I would rather have the 300 first, but if I happen to throw an 800, I'm not going to complain.

I believe the 800 is more valued since it requires 30 frames of good bowling, not just 10.

Having not accomplished either one, I am confident I will shoot 800 before I shoot 300. Standing joke in my house is that I will probably get a 279 triplicate

There's too much luck involved in getting a 300.  I had the front 7 and left a STONE 9 pin last night.  Yeah, I hit a pinch high.  But if I hit a quarter inch further left OR right, it's a strike.

I've had two sanctioned 300s (plus another one in practice) and a 299.  (All of them this season actually, at two very different houses).  Yet I've never had an 800.  I can't put together three high games.  My two highest sets are a 786 and a 776.  It's very, very hard to keep up with transition and bowl three consecutive games averaging 267 or higher.

The 800 is tougher without a doubt.

Look at the numbers. There will be 5 to 6 times as many 300's shot this year as 800's.

You can get lucky 300's. You can't get lucky 800's. You have to really earn the 800.

800 is tougher, I figured I'd shoot 800 before 300 as I have tons of 279 games (in excess of 75) but as fate would have it, I shot my first 300 this year (and yes luck is somewhat needed, I had a lucky break in the run) then 4 months later I pop off another 300.  that night I had the shot at 800 and blew it in the 8th frame of game 3

Even if I didn't already have a 300, I'd go with the 800. As mentioned already, anybody can be good for one game, but it takes more than that to shoot an 800. You have to be good all night.

All too often I've seen people shoot a 300 and barely break 600 for the night or in your friend's case, only shoot 650. Yeah, he shot 300, but he only averaged 175 for the other two games.

As Pinbuster said, statistics say that shooting an 800 series is many times more difficult than shooting a 300 game.  The 800 series is by far a better achievement.

Print this all off to show your buddy.  300 requires mostly consistency and a bit of luck for 1 game.  800 requires nearly all consistency and a bit of luck per game for 3 games.  Now whereas 800 allows you to miss here or there once or twice a game, 300 requires all of them going down every shot, but it doesn't take 3 solid games to shoot 300.  Plus the crunch time is a lot smaller . . you can't really think 300 until you get the front 8 at least, and shouldn't until you get 9, but we all do it.  But when you go into the last game of a set with 540 or 550 and have a good shot . . you can't tell me you're not thinking 800, and then instead of just having to worry about a few shots, you've got 12 shots to think about over the next 45 minutes if you're bowling 5 man teams.  300's are really fun, but 800 is the real number.  There are a lot of guys out there that have a handful of 300's that will never crack even 750, but I bet you can't find one person out there at the end of their bowling career that has an 800 and doesn't have a 300, or at least that doesn't have a significant amount of 800's without a 300.

He only shot 650?  What happened the other two games?  He can have his 300.  I'd take that in league.  Let him shoot 300 one game, but if he posts a couple 175's the other two and we take two out of three games and total . . yay for him.  As you can see . . 300 is more of a number for you to take pride in.  Saying you got a 300 nowadays doesn't mean a whole lot to anybody else, but for you and your close friends, there's that sense of accomplishment, and something else to add to the resume.  People still respect 800's.  Here's a suggestion.  Take your buddy out pot bowling since your average is 20 pins higher . . then we'll see where that 300 gets that one game wonder . .
